Buddy calls and asks if I want a roll off full of wood. I do need to get a bit more in my stacks but have been trying to be a little selective as I don’t want to move a bunch of wood when I move. When it rains it puts I guess, take it all or take nothing. Looks like some nice straight pieces though. I’m thinking it’s elm, what says you? Container will be full when dropped off so I got some work ahead.
Looks like the smaller logs (mossy covered) are red elm and the bigger are walnut...unless all from the same tree then id say red elm. Hard to tell from the twig structure as im not well versed in walnut limbs. Nice score there sir!
Elm is a definite possibility, large white stripe on the big log makes me think elm. But looks like more sap wood than I’m used to seeing on elm, could be a regional thing. If it’s elm it is a good score, but seeing as it was taken alive, it is gonna be awhile before it is good firewood. How soon are you moving?
No set date to move but with the way the market is it’ll happen fast when it does. This would be css ASAP and used next winter. I’ve had elm before and liked it so that’s good, walnut not so much. But I’ll take what he’s got, need some quicker drying wood for shoulder season.
Hmm, I’ve had no problem burning one year dry elm. As far as shoulder season I guess it’s not like soft maple or anything but when all the rest of my wood is oak and locust it’ll have to do.
Those limbs/twigs coming off the base of the big log don't look like walnut...walnut limbs are usually thicker. Looks like elm.
Well the elm never showed up. Got a small load of silver maple though. Lot of it has rot in the center. Gotta take what’s available when it’s available. It’s from the village I live in and seems like good ol’ boys club. The good ol’ boys get the primo stuff and everyone else gets rot. Supposedly in line for some better wood this week. Oh well, I like silver and it’ll be ready by fall. Beautiful sunny day with no wind. Around 12 degrees. The 562 is a beast to start in this cold. Never had a saw start as hard in low temps.
So the village came through today and dropped off some more wood that’s all solid. Was a couple big loader buckets full. I guess the roll off dumpster is coming tomorrow, he tried today but it was frozen solid in the dumpster, had it straight up in the air and wood wasn’t sliding out. Going to park truck in shop overnight and try again tomorrow. Some pretty big pieces in this load. Second cut in I found metal with a brand new 30” chain,. Still not sure what species this is, someone did Siberian elm. It’s not stringy like Elms I’ve had in the past(thank god). The sap wood doesn’t really split either, just kinda fractures. The trees were planted along neighborhood streets. I’m gonna be busy for a while. Feel a little bad because This is a mess and gonna be in driveway for a while and I live really close to neighbors.
Got me on this one. Looks like walnut, but dont think so. Does look like elm too, but twig structure has me thinking otherwise. Whatever it is its some decent looking wood regardless. That $%^&$ about the metal. Especially with a long chain
That white stripe along the large trunk section really has me thinking elm. Looks like red/slippery elm at first glance, but not quite right. I’ll go way out on a limb here and speculate it could be a hybrid red/Siberian? It would make sense the city would want to plant elms that would be somewhat resistant to the Dutch elm disease. https://openprairie.sdstate.edu/cgi...dir=1&article=1047&context=agexperimentsta_tb
The bark looks like elm. The center of the logs look a little dark but like what was previously said it could be the area the tree grew in.
