We had freezing rain here yesterday. I emptied the ashes and as I walked up the stairs I noticed that the outside steps were dry with no ice. I stepped out the door and went down, spilling the ashes on myself. I was laying on the bottom step and I hear my wife coming, next thing I know she’s screaming and then she landed on me. In a couple of seconds we realized we were ok and started laughing out load. Luckily the ashes were cold or I would have been in trouble. The steps looked fine but there was a slick coat of ice on them. Bad things can happen fast! Be careful
In January 2006 I was walking out of my attached garage to get my wife's car out of the detached garage. It was about 6am, 46 degrees and pouring rain. I didn't think about the fact that it had been sub zero for several days prior. The rain was sitting on top of frozen ground and ice. I walked out of the garage, slipped and broke my arm in 3 places.
My wife walks with a cane. Outside she uses a ski pole. She took the cap off of it yesterday so the magnesium or whatever tip grips the ice. Happens in a flash. Glad you were okay, theburtman that sounds expensive and painful! Lost a good buddy two years ago because he had to get the trash to the end of the driveway and he fell and hit his head and never came to. I loved Hill Street Blues and that line, "HEY, let's be careful out there"!
I had a situation happen to me about 2 months ago. Going into a local sporting goods store, took 2 steps and slipped, caught myself in a pushup position, went down to one knee. Just touched my knee on the pavement. I jumped up so fast the lady sitting outside in the car didn't even see it happen. I was very fortunate, i didn't hurt anything, could have broken a wrist at the least. Ice, or slick surfaces, never, ever, walk with your hands in your pockets, or in your jacket pockets! Its a accident waiting to happen. Glad to hear you and the wife didn't get hurt.
Couple years ago i went out to start my work van after a dusting of snow that fell on top of ice. My feet shot out in front so fast i landed on my right hip, Hard! With my feet in the air. Good thing i didn't knock myself out, because miss july wouldn't have come looking for me till after dark...if at all... Side note: lucky i didn't have my sidearm on me, i always tuck it on my right hip...that would have been bad.

Glad you and your wife are ok. Ice is very unforgiving (I'll take 10 feet of snow over 1/2 inch of ice any day). About seven or eight winters ago we were having the same type of season we are now, lots of ice and little snow. Well, the German Shepherd needs to run, and the only place that was moderately ok to do so was our road (private dirt road). The sides were icy, but the middle wasn't too bad (with sanding and vehicle traffic). Took him out there around 9PM one evening and woke up in the road later on with the dog standing over me. Apparently one of the times I went to throw his ball I must have slipped on the ice and wham, knocked out. No idea how long I was out but thankful no one drove over me. Took over a year to get over that concussion. I knew better, and I always have multiple pairs of boots with micro spikes on them, but no, stupid me wasn't wearing them this time. As a retired bomb tech, you would think that I would remember that it only takes one minor mistake for everything to go wrong.
