I was loading a truck and the driver turned out to be a wood burner! He also turned out to be a SMART wood burner so I told him about this place… He even knew to dry pine for 2 or 3 years and burn it. What a great thing to run into it made my day and distracted me from my job..
That is so rare! I've never met another wood burner that wasn't from this site that actually knew how to burn wood.
I tried to get my father in law to try the 3 year plan. He has access to plenty of wood at times but won't buy into stockpiling any. He thinks as long as the bark is falling off its dry and I'm talking oak rounds that have only been cut for 6 months if that. Oh well you can't fix everyone.
Great story. I have had guys stop by as I was splitting in the driveway and talk to me about burning, but it's rare the ones that get ahead with stockpiling dry wood like ourselves. Most do not want to put in the effort to reap the results.
I've had a few folks strike up small talk at the free private wood dump - the usual comments "that ought to heat you this winter" When I tell them the wood won't be burned until 2-3yrs from now - I get some "Huh's?" I point them to the poplar and soft maple logs explaining that they could get by burning that stuff next year maybe...and it keeps them off the oak and hickory
I want a wood dump around here.. How in the world does one stumble upon that? All kidding aside, there is simply no free wood around here. I have to go to the Washington DC metro to get any free wood unless I help my buddy cut on his property.
Wow, that's hard to believe. I thought PA was #1 in the nation in hardwood production...figured there would be wood all over the place. Do you live deep in the city, or what's the deal?
Found a c-list ad one day and dropped by after chatting with the guy on the phone. It's a nice level piece of land and he's wanting to amend his large gardens with wood chips and he has a buddy with a tree service. Tree service doesn't pay tipping fees and landowner gets free mulch - anyone else that wants free wood can come get some. I know.... sucks to be me
Our town has a recycling station. Part of it has a compost for leaves & grass and then another section for brush and small cut up logs. Since burning is so popular in this area, the town DPW workers pick through the good stuff and drop off the unwanted. The only time I might get lucky at the pile is when the tree companies (working for the town) drop off what they collect in a day. It's rare to get free wood around these parts.
