With the latest cold snap, I realized I was running low on my hedge stash for the really cold nights. Plus any reason to fire up the 660 and splitter is a fun day in my book. I decided to try out some pina colada fuel scent. It smells nice and my eyes don't burn if I get a good whiff of exhaust. Had to pull out the big saw for these 2" monsters. LOL. Usually I don't bother with this little stuff, but when someone else cuts and delivers it, I just can't say no. Got 2 logs cut and lined up ready for splitting. Got it all split now just gotta stack it in the tote. Fit it all in one tote except for 4 pieces. Oh well just have to burn them tonight.
Cool. We don’t have any here. Would love to try someday. I guess I’ll settle for Black Locust for my heavy hitter lineup
Black locust is a very close second place to hedge. Hedge can also be problematic to burn. If you have a mild steel stove hedge can warp it, or if you have a cast iron stove Hedge can get it so hot that it cracks.
Sweet haul! I heard about hedge for years and never saw any or had access to it until my tree climbing buddy got a job where he had to remove it and some oak so I got all that and paid for it too! How long do you usually have to season it? Sent from my SM-G950U using Tapatalk
I've never burned hedge apple and have only seen it at one residence in my city. Someday I'm hoping to get the chance to burn it. How about 5 splits of your hedge for 8 splits of my gamble oak?
That all depends, firewood drying charts say 12 months. If it is used for fence posts then it may season for 30-50 years or more.
These stove problems....is this if you run a stove full? Or run it too hot, ie too much air? Or can it cause these issues even if you adjust for temps like you would with any other wood?
??? I haven’t had a bit of problems with either of my NC13 or 30. The only issue ive had with hedge in either is the amount of coals and start up. As long as as you can control the air flow, which the newer stove do quite well.
Pina colada fuel scent, now I've seen everything. How cool! If it makes it so your eyes don't burn, I want! I am actually super sensitive to exhaust smells. Well, any chemical smell. Although, I have been going through allergy shot treatment and a boatload of allergy pills daily and I must say that it is not bothering me lately. Makes me wonder if the allergy regimen 'cured' that problem!
And Chvymn99 and I just did a short test where I burned some hedge he gave me. I had no problems at all with how it burned and wish I had more. I do know of one about 13 miles from us...
This has been my only issue also, mostly the coals build up. I have been using Ponderosa Pine & Little Leaf Lindenwood to alleviate that this year. Last year was Silver Maple. Start up from cold stove can be a bearcat with Osage but if I have a nice bed of coals it hasn’t been an issue.
Awesome score!! I've burned green fresh cut hedge and it burns extremely hot. I've noticed the fire takes off a little faster if its seasoned though. Usually it takes a year to season and dry. The yellow wood will turn a very dark orange brown. Much like mulberry and locust.
I found the pina colada additive here on ebay. There is also a variety pack, that you can mix and match different scents.
Agree. It’s prevalent here. I try to limit putting one or two pieces in my burn box with my mix of hardwoods, usually oak.
