Got offered some good money and tickets paid for to fly to maine to do a lot of pruning and felling…guy said he would buy a chainsaw up there id feel more confident bringing my own….probably no way i could carry on a chainsaw right? Am i insane for thinking this? Either way very excited to go on a working trip maybe i should get recommendations for a down to earth cool chainsaw shop in maine instead

I check in my rifle for flight to Colorado for elk and mule deer hunt... But then again never tried to bring a chainsaw.
Probably has to be completely drained and in some type of airline approved case.

So I have no idea the answer to your question. But I would say get there waaaayyyyy before your flight to check in, cause I could see this potentially taking you a while.

TSA has a website. If no info there, give them a call.

I’ve never been to the north east states so My thoughts might be way off base. And I don’t know the particulars of the planned job, ( how many days of work, lodging, etc.) But, how far of a trip is it. What do you have for your personal vehicle? I’m thinking if’n it was me I would throw a handful of saws plus all the other required plunder (spare chains, chaps, helmet, gas mix, oil etc.) into the back of my pickup and drive to the job and let him pay the fuel bill. But out here driving any distance at all is just the nature of the beast.
You said he offered good money plus the tickets, so if it was less than an 8-10 hour drive I’d be loading up the truck.
If you fly to it and locate a saw shop, buy a saw in your preferred color and size ( if there’s any in stock anyplace), extra chain or two, bar oil, gas can, chaps and anything else you need. What do you do with it at the end of the job? Leave it all behind?
Also not sure what the temperatures and weather are like in that part of the world, but it seems like I would have plenty of baggage in just warm clothes.
I’d likely drive with my own stuff or pass.

Box it up and post it to yourself.

    Or sell it to someone.

You may be able to check it for underbelly stowage but I don't think there's any way you'll carry on a saw!

Just UPS it up to the guy you are doing the job for. I've travelled a gagillion miles via air and lugging a carry-on bag around the airport is no fun...there's no way I'd add a chainsaw to that too.

As long as it's not in your Carry On, you should be good to go. :D

I take lots of tools and equipment (however never a chainsaw) on planes for my job several times a year. Package it up well and run it through checked baggage. Here in Canada I then need to to take it to over sized and special baggage handling where they xray it in front of me. Half the time it goes right through but the other half I have to open up the cases for "show and tell" as there are lots of unusual pieces of equipment and tools.

    Good luck.

I don’t know your vehicle situation but,
Maybe spend one day to drive up with your gear ( your vehicle if you are able to leave it behind, or a rental that you can drop off at airport) leave your gear behind then fly back and forth until the job is done, drive back with your stuff at the end.
    Just tossing around ideas…..

Is this a buddy or something? Just wondering why he can't find someone local to do the job? (no offense)

Going up to do a job like that in an area I had never been to before I would definitely drive in order to have all the necessary gear/clothing needed for the job and the weather as well as having my own transpo if things went sour. If no other option than flying, I would UPS the chainsaw power head and chains and put the bar in my checked baggage (no way you're not going to Maine this time of year without checked baggage for winter clothing!).

What part of maine? Plenty of saw shops around should be able to get what you need. Or buy one online and have it shipped directly to the boss in maine.
