Small paying job from today. I was asked to fell this hickory (16-18" DBH) but broken top hung up in a tangle so i said no. He had it felled, did some bucking and had me finish it off. I trimmed it up with the 194 first to clear the way. Pics before i started. Marked off the cuts and the 500i was winning until it hit a nail on the second cut. A bunch of sparks come shooting out! Just touched up a good used chain too. Back up chain was a virgin loop. I started at the top and worked my way down instead. Went half throttle on the last two cuts (while praying ) and no more metal hit. When splitting i later discovered this. An old eye hook from a dog run. THAT WAS CLOSE! On the bottom of the log hidden from view with all the overgrowth. Other than the nail, it made very short work of it. Entire tree was off the ground which made it a lot easier. Halved all the larger rounds. Ive never had any hickory split this easily. Split like it was ash or oak, not hickory. Several with only one hit. He wants me to help him split all the wood with his hydro at some future date. The oak chunks are from last July and this thread Noodling Some Big Oak.
This fiskars isocore was first introduced to me on some hickory that looked kinda similar to this i knew i had to have one myself because nothing is worse than the damm wedge bouncing off the log killing all momentum forcing u to bend over….good thing you missed that dog leash im sure that would have done sumthing bad
I do very little sledge and wedge splitting. Have you ever tried cutting a kerf with the saw in the end of the round so the wedge stays put? Works pretty good. Im glad i missed that bolt too or you mightve heard me swearing from Pennsylvania!
Another beauty score Brad Amazing how it split so clean and easy for you. I don't recognize the bark as one that I have any experience with. Which variety of hickory do you think it is?
He is keeping the wood. Pretty sure its pignut hickory. Shagbark, pignut and bitternut are the only ones ive encountered
If he offered the wood as payment, i mightve said yes, but cash trumps wood. He has a lot of woods but its 45 minutes from home in East Haddam. That BL is five minutes from there too!
I hear you there. You hoard to sell, so if you can skip the transporting, processing, stacking, drying, and delivery/re-stacking, and make money upfront off your labor instead, you done gooder I was definitely confused myself. I knew it wasn't shagbark, but it didn't quite look right for the pignut I've worked on before either.
You spiked my curiosity on this. When i go back to help him split ill take more picks, look for nuts and leaves, post an ID thread. That is some primo wood and tempting to take some.
Woah, what beautiful wood! That is amazing. What length bar you using on 500i? Always price in the cost of a new chain on any yard tree, lol. Or, price in two of them!
I dont like it, i love it. I couldve used the 361 for this job, but its so much fun to cut wood with this saw. With a new chain i bucked that trunk up in ten minutes! Amazing throttle response.
The dark color in that hickory, and stark contrast to the bright sapwood, is stunning. Don't recall ever seeing that in any hickory I've cut.
I see "throttle response" mentioned quite often... does this just mean that you mash the trigger and it is quick to respond? Might be one of those things you need to feel in your hands.
Its a Carlton 22". .375/76 DL i think. Oddball size which ive grown to love. I really didnt need the 500 here, but its so much fun to cut with.
X2! I have a lot of pignut hickory in the woods. The storms always seem to uproot the monster trees furthers from the trail. I'll swing the axe for 10 times and then go back to the truck for the 372.
