Is a blown over red oak at my SIL's Looking back at the stump. Lots of cleaning on trunk and underfoot before a full blown attack The tree splits into 2 large branches. The swell is to the bottom left. Here's where the 2 branches begin. We decided the stump end would be left alone. The trunk was still being held up. Ok... on with the attack. A cut just before the swell of the 2 branches Then, dissection and take away... I was cutting into 32in lengths. You'll notice a slope up to the yard. The tree straddled runoff from a French drain, including a sump. Over and over... I used my 445 and 435 while my gifted 350 had it expected hissy fit, which it eventually got over and did most of the cutting. Very satisfactory, by the way. ~~cont~~
I was moving a round as I was cutting the trunk to keep the trunk up off the ground. Decent size. This was the heaviest. The branch swell. We both ran out energy after a couple hours. We, being my SIL's friend, Brian, with the JD The cutting area. There's still some big branches to the right, as well as the trunk. If you zoom in, you can see the bit of runoff from the drain. We maxed the lifting of the bucket, but it was still better than lifting manually. I was able to appreciate the 18" bar and larger powerhead(52cc) of the 350. I did leave it idling when tending to rigging the chain. I was afraid it wouldn't restart. My other saws are mid40's CC. I'll get back there at some point. The rounds need to be halved and busted up to load. There's no time limit. Waiting for the Aleve to kick in.
Some nice wood to be had. Never fun trying to retrieve it from a tough spot. Great that he had the JD to help you out!
Great job, my friend. Looks like solid wood that you got so far. That is heavy at the size and a tough spot. Glad you had help and hydraulics. Do you haul on a trailer? Maybe just cut in half and load rounds with tractor, then split at your place?
I'll start by cutting most rounds to stove length. I'll then split into halves or quarters. That area is accessible to drive right up to. So either with my friends PU, or with my minivan, it'll all get here, in time. Maybe not moved until next spring. No trailer here.
Good sized tree. It looks like those rounds would fit in the bucket and you could have skipped the chain, but pictures can be deceiving.
They probably would have fit. Putting the chain around and lifting with the bucket saved me from rolling them in uphill and wallowing further in the wet muck.
I was looking at the conditions and asking how i wouldve done it with no tractor. Cut them 16", section with Isocore and carry out either alone or with log tongs. PITA, but its gets it done! Hoard on my friend!
Unfortunately, I've not been able to do much more with this wood, at MY SIL's. It's still there until I'm able to deal with it. Additionally, my SIL is having 5-6 oak trees taken down. They are leaning where she doesn't want them to. She has another BIL that'll be taking some of it. I'll be sure to get pics of the take downs. A crane will be used. Big red oaks, comparable to the one at the top of this thread.
