Here is the Hickory that was c/s/s today. It was a lot of work, however it keeps one active and motivated. The top was mostly dead and in danger to be taken down by the tree trimmers who service the power lines.
Really, I would of thought there was plenty of Hickory in your area. I guess I will have to pay more attention next time I up that way.
Hickory is probably my favorite to get. More than anything the smells when cutting and even splitting.
Hickory is an interesting wood. The way the bark peels up, the aroma it puts off. Even the sapsuckers love it, if you've ever noticed the lines of holes around the trunk, and the sap that oozes out of freshly cut wood. The bark is so tough it'll wear down saw blades. And of course the powder post beetles that bore into it the first year and get saw dust all over, especially after some strong winds. Don't stack it next to where you park a side by side, LOL. I learned that the hard way. Of course the reward comes in burning it. I also set several pieces aside for smoking meat. Love Hickory!
Sure wish we had more. When I was a kid there were lots and lots of hickory but over the years most got cut. I do know of one 20-30 acre woods that is 95% hickory though but it is a sportsman's club.
Seems like we are in a pocket area. Hickory seems to be north and south of us mostly on the Iowa side of the river.
Hickory, a wood snob favorite! (Yes, I'm a wood snob) Make sure you put some back for cooking and smoking duties! I did teo big batches of jerky from my sons deer a few weeks back over a 50/50 mix of applewood and hickory, all from trees we took down. It's the best mix for jerky if you ask me!!
Apple is great but after years of processing orchard after orchard, I love me a nice straight log, as long as it isn't elm or gum (someone say snob, lol?).
