Had a neighbor stop buy and asked How much I would charge for a round cutoff???? It would be either Ash or Cottonwood 36-40" in diameter and roughly 4-6" thick.....They want to make table out of it...What do you think??

I guess it depends how much you like the neighbor?

I've given a few of those to people I know, never charged for them. Most gave me some $ for fuel/time. $20.00 to $ 50.00 Iirc. I think Warner and MikeInMa have the correct answer. Sometimes a little good will goes way further than money.

How much time, effort, and $$ do you have in the round they are looking to get a piece of? Did you pay for a log drop? Was it a free drop from a tree service? Was it a 'free' scrounge (no scrounge is truly free as there is always your labor, fuel, etc. involved)? Did it come off your own property? And so on. If you have a lot of time and money in sourcing the timber and it is part of either your livelihood (you sell firewood) or your utilities (heating with wood), then some recompense would be expected. If it was free wood and you have plenty, then personally I wouldn't charge a neighbor (they usually pay you back in one form or another). I had a similar request earlier this year from a neighbor after she saw I scrounged a large red oak from an Asplundh power line clearing. I had some $$ in it for the tractor (had to make several trips about half a mile down the road) however I did not charge her for the 'table' cookie she requested. She paid me back with several baskets of fresh fruits and vegetables from her garden so it was a win for both sides.

Fully agree with this, if it was a good neighbor I would give it to them and tell them to have fun and to let me see it when they get done... Now if the neighbor is a prick... That's a different story.

If you are a beer drinker, a case of your favorite. If not, maybe a nice pack of rib-eye steaks. If it were one of my neighbors, that's the direction I'd be going.

If you get along with the neighbor, no charge. If you've had minimal contact but no problems. a slight fee of some kind.
If he's an arsehole, a bigger fee to try and make things better or tell him to pound sand.

Good answers above. Ask to see how it turns out...if it's something you like or could use.....inside or outside -on a deck, porch, patio.....maybe he could make you one.
