For St Louis residents. Every town should do the same thing instead of sending it through a tub grinder. City of St. Louis offering free firewood to residents
I had that story fed to me as well through google. Around here, they chip it up and sell it for mulch.
I would like to see that program spread to other cities and villages...so long as it is for a families needs and not for some firewood sellers.
Tulsa has a free green waste dump site for residents, I live 40 miles away and not a Tulsa resident but all that are can dump anything green there. They turn small stuff to mulch that is free for anyone and allow everyone to come in and cut the big stuff up for firewood. They will even let you haul a splitter in and split it right there if you want. A good backup if the tree jobs dry up.
My former hometown (next one over to me now) used to offer cutting "permits" (it was a waiver form) to residents to cut wood from a town dumping area. They had to stop as folks were getting into arguments while there from what i heard. I only cut there once, as the wood was picked over and covered with sand/grit etc. Town workers knew of primo wood and took it for themselves.
Wonder how they deal with the liability issue of someone cutting w/ a chainsaw on site. I can see that being a discouraging factor a lot of times.
the one here has a big sign, at your own risk etc etc. maybe that’s enough to get them off the hook ? Come mid January it is packed with people. I trust a very select few around me with a saw and steer clear during cold months. Kind of like hunting on public land.
Or the risk of someone injuring themselves while loading. I wonder if it's city employees doing the cutting?
Makes ya wonder how long it will last till some idyet tries to sue after an injury. Sad but sign of the times.
