Never have seen one in the wild around here. Very popular yard tree and scrounged from such. EODMSgt has cut them in the wild. Maybe he can shed more light?

Nice. I live less than ten minutes from the AT trail here. Like your area, there were many logging towns that sprung up around here in the late 1800's-early 1900's and they clear cut a lot of timber back then.

Does not look like any SM I have ever seen in the forest.

Might have to wait for spring and see a leaf.

Just took a walk through my woods and the only tree I found remotely similar (bark-wise) was a swamp (red) maple.

I didn’t even think about checking the ground for leaves. I thought I had found sbh and the guys I was cycling with said no, so I took their word on it, since they are older and have seen big sbh before.

Mount Rogers is on my list as the highest peak in VA. I hiked the Old Rag circuit in Shenandoah National Park. Definitely worth a look if you have never been. Looks like similar landscape.

Could be a silver maple. I was asked to take this tree down for a friends neighbor last week. (i declined as there are wires too close even though i could get a picker in their small front yard) I was at my friends again today and thought of this thread. Yep. But something seems off. Might have to wait on leaves to properly ID it.

    It's definitely got shaggy bark.

My guess on the mystery tree is a red maple. My parents got a HUGE one in the center of there yard and the bark looks just like that. Minus the bottom 5 feet(there was 6 of us little kids picking the bark off:emb:). Only ever noticed it on the giant reds though.
