One aspect I don't much care for in regards to modern chainsaws is the amount of plastic parts used versus my 2 older saws where the only plastic on them are the back shrouds. Everything else is alloy and I prefer alloy over plastic. I presume that plastic has to do with production cost but I don't see any saws getting less expensive. They only increase in price. Like my 028. All the fasteners are Torx head as well. Same with the 075.

Yeah I just realized that the 021 case is plastic instead of magnesium. I guess the 021 was not a "pro" saw like the 028.

What are all those grooves there for behind the clutch??

1123 saws (a family of which the 021 is a member) are built a little different than an 028. The engine is completely self-contained, in theory, you could run it outside of the saw chassis. The entire saw is then assembled onto this plastic (albeit fairly strong glass fibre reinforced plastic) chassis. Unlike the 028 and similar, the plastic chassis does not house the engine crankcase, although there are saws that do. (Husqvarna 345/350 for example.)

    Thanks for the insight.

Replaced the springs today. They were definitely cooked. I could pull them apart easily once removed and I couldn't move the new ones at all.

Going to clean up the brake band. There's definitely some melted plastic between the housing and the band as well as on the inside of the band. I used a wire wheel to clean off the melted plastic all around the center hole of the clutch.

    Got all the parts in.

Had to clean up the case with a combo of a wire wheel, a drill, a steel brush, and a screwdriver. The chain brake band was pretty much glued to the case. Hit that with the wire wheel after breaking it free.

Installed the new worm gear for the oil pump. Installed the washer, then clutch. Hit the clutch guts with some lithium grease and wiped the excess and edges clean, installed the new c-clip. Then realized the metal part of the worm gear that fits into the groove of the sprocket was getting stuck in two spots so I cleaned those out with the screwdriver.

Had no issues installing the cooling plate, gasket, and muffler. Right before I did that I found a small chunk of plastic that was stuck to the side of the cylinder. Hopefully that was the only piece and I managed to get it out easily. Next time I have to be more careful plugging up the exhaust port.

Started her up, adjusted the carb, and she was purring away. It was getting late and dark so I didn't get a chance to do any test cuts but that I will do tomorrow.

Anyone know why there is only one carb adjustment screw + one idle screw on the 021? I turned the carb screw all the way in, then backed it out 1 full turn and made some very micro adjustments. I'll know more tomorrow when I do the test cutting.
