On a new farm my brother is renting, while harvesting I saw this gem of an American Elm. It’s pretty good sized for an American Elm around here. The first 4 pics are of the Elm & the last 2 pics are for the haters in the crowd ( yeh, you know who you are )
The reason I can… I have free run of all the monster trees of better species I want. If that’s what you have to work with, more power to ya. Glad to see you getting decent size wood. Hoard on.
We have some Oaks that size but no Black Locust that large. Black Locust is widely considered an invasive species around here & was almost eradicated, it is making a come back with all the non-maintained CRP, ditches & fence lines. I have a place to cut about 30 - 12” BL but no sense in whacking down productive living trees. That Elm was surrounded by BL, the 3 I cut were to create a felling window rather that just drop it on & damage them.
That's a nice tree and great wood if you have a splitter. I have some like that right now in the basement. Take a couple of smaller ones and knock them together and enjoy the ringing sound.
Oh yeah!!! That’s what I’m talking about!! Standing dead elm with the bark falling off. If it wasn’t for trees like that, I would’ve froze to death every winter since I became a full time wood burner. I’ve been itching to tackle another one like that, I’ve got my eye on a couple of em.
That area looks overgrown and unused. Do you have to do much clean up. That’s always my least favorite part. They shatter pretty good and lots of big pieces of bark, make a big mess
That is so very true, I have gotten through a more then a few years hunting down dead standing elm to burn... I'm trying to get ahead, got to do what ya got to do but working the hours I do in the summer when I have free time I could be cutting and trying to get better ahead or spending time with the misses, family wins out, I may not be ahead and burn wood that's wetter then I should but we have never gone without heat in the winter.
In the first pic on the left is the road ditch & a gravel road into & on which I dropped the left hand trunk. To the right is a bean field in which I dropped the right trunk. I cheated I used the 4440 with loader to shove the debris back into the fence line. The fence line hasn’t been maintained in about 25-30 years so it’s pretty narly. I had forgotten what a mess those make when they hit the ground.
