Saw my tree guy and he ended up dumping his truckload at the dump. I went there a little later and picked up some black locust, norway maple, and some sassafras. First time ever getting sassafras and man does it just smell amazing. I kept the sassafras for myself and am giving my neighbor the rest along with 2 rounds of sassafras. I couldn't stop sniffing it. Kind of light though - I thought it would be heavy but I guess not.
I burn a lot of sassafras in the shoulder seasons it does pretty good leaves a pretty nice coal bed in my owb burns comparable to poplar for me
Sass is excellent shoulder wood. I suppose if needed, it would split down to excellent kindling. Can't get enough of that root beer smell!
Careful how much you sniff it you might find yourself listening to EDM half naked in the garage! sassafras oil is a hallucinogen.
I think black birch smells more like root beer but yes I know they used to make root beer from the roots of sassafras......before they figured out it fricks you up hahahahahah. That might be fun actually! hahahahahahahahaha
I would burn only black birch if I could get enough of it. Unfortunately it’s a log here and there for me.
I’m sitting on more than a cord of black birch for this season (with some yellow mixed in) and keep hankering for this ever elusive Sassy I have yet to score There’s a downed 8” sassafras limb on a backroad near my work that’s been there since August 2020. I may have to go scratch that itch soon...
I love sassafras. Not for the burning but for the sweet aroma it gives when cutting. I'd never heard of it as a hallucinogen before reading about it on this forum. I'm thinking I might cut one or two of them this winter.
Great find there. Love me some sassy. My favorite SS wood just for smell. Holds the bark for a long time too. I just split a few rounds this week from April and the bark was tight yet. Sat uncovered too.
But that really doesn't tell us squat diddly about it. How much would have to be consumed, for example, in order to have any effect? As for me, it is not a concern at all and I'm very happy it grows on our land.
Yep, I was just having some fun with LordOfTheFlies. Simply cutting or handling sassafras would have no effects.
