I picked up some rounds of wood from a guy clearing some land near me this morning. Can you guys tell me what kind of wood this is. Two different types.

Sorry, here's the second one: DF3C9783-8542-42A5-AF41-2DDAFDC096E7.jpeg Second one is VERY heavy wood.

First looks like chestnut oak bark to me. If it’s not heavy maybe cottonwood? I’ve only seen cotton wood on here, so not familiar with bark.
    Second looks like cherry

Thanks, Chud. First one wasn't light, but second one was noticeably heavier.

Second one resembles cherry, although it could be black birch as well. The heavy description fits. Usually cherry bark gets a little more scaly as it matures. I’ve gotten black birch that had darker heart wood similar to that.

Doh! I'm not reading good things about cottonwood. Too bad. The guy had a pretty good selection of wood to choose from too. I just took this one because it was on the top of the pile and it was a good size girth.
Oh well, I may go back for another load. Thanks, guys.

First one looks like cottonwood, if it's wet it should have a bit of a barn yard smell to it that would give it away. The second one I'm not familiar with...

JPDavis , yup, that's cottonwood alright. Strong barnyard smell, and it's also very wet. I guess it'll dry out eventually... Seems like chit wood. 9AB7611A-E46F-4DAD-9A1A-F7FA012DAAA1.jpeg

We don't have cotton wood, only experience with it is seeing it out west one time and yall talking about it. But dang that bark looks like chestnut oak, and I would have bet on that...

I always go for the wood I can recognize, even if it's a bit harder to get to.

When I split rounds I have I always go for the easy ones first.

I, too, made the same mistake picking a small amount of cottonwood. That stuff smells like cat pizz to me. Luckily for me it's a very small amount but lesson learned.

And I was gonna say definitely cherry on the 2nd one based on the color of the wood but the bark does have those distinctive black birch rings that grow around the trunk lines.

Black birch smells like birch beer / root beer to me. Cherry has a distinctive bitter yet fruity smell to it.
