I called yesterday, and was asked to send pics of the crack. Waiting to hear back.

Looks just like mine but the outside door covered the crack so it More or less contained

Guessing your nice new super active Cat is raring to go hot and igniting wood gas near it like a secondary burn. My Cat stove will do that when I have a fresh hot load. Different stove so it may not apply? My guess however.
Good to see that you are getting in some run time on the new stove. Enjoy.

My cat will do it to under certain conditions during black box mode with a hot cat. I figure it's like a glow plug and hot enough to cause the cold firebox smoke to burst into flames even before the chemical reaction of the catalyst has a chance to oxidize the smoke.

That happens sometimes but not always (flames near the cat canister). You see, there’s another small fresh air source just for the cat (rear panel of the stove right side near the bottom. This intake is modulated by a bi-metal valve. Hidden behind a removable cover).

Has anyone received a replacement radiator that’s PAINTED? The two previous radiators were bare steel, not painted. Just got a painted radiator. Any thoughts
on whether this could cause a problem?

Hey all. Great thread. I've been researching Woodstock stoves, so reading this has been quite helpful. IS seems like a great performing stove with great control. I am curious about what they changed in the design.

They have updated a sled that goes over the catalyst
They have updated the bi-metallic tab to let in air
They have done some updating to the metal face especially near the door hinges.

Thanks CoackSchaller. Yea there were some pics in the thread of mods to the sled. The faceplate cracking occurred right along a weld with a piece of metal that i think is associated with the air wash for the glass. That is mostly what I was interested in finding out what they did differently.

    Hey folks, look who's back!

Last Friday I finally installed my IS stove that had been repaired by Woodstock.... and returned in the fall of 2020. And there it sat, in its crate, on my porch for just over a year. Honestly I was not in any hurry to get it installed due to the high price of firewood, the low price of oil and a new boiler that really does wring the last three BTUs out of #2 fuel oil. But opportunity knocked last Friday and now it is sitting back where it always did live.

Woodstock seems to have done a nice job on the firebox face crack repair by putting a plate over the entire area that is behind the door. It is <mostly> together but somewhere along the way I seem to have lost the chimney collar bolts and have to get some new ones. Not sure of the size but they appear to be 5/16, not sure of the thread pitch but I will find out tomorrow. Anyway with a bit of fitting and tweaking it should be running in a couple of days.

I have been stopping in but not posting much to the forum due to my burning inactivity. I will try to participate a bit more once basking in the glow of a hot stove in the house.

Just got my repaired IS installed and it does have a radiator that is painted flat black.

I cannot see how this can be much of a problem. That said, I think the paint live will be measured in hours or minutes 'cause paint does not prove durable when it is attached to red, and occasionally orange steel.

Second fire in the Ideal Steel. It was nearly 60 outside today but I ran the stove pretty hard to burn the solvents out of the fresh paint. This temp. is with four windows open..... Never, ever have I hoped for a stove to have a shorter burn time. :bug:

It has been a while.... how is Dennis anyway? Dennis, are you out there? HELLO ???????

This post is in jest but I do truly hope Dennis is OK and still burning wood! I had the pleasure of meeting both Dennis and Judy some years ago at an open house at Woodstock Soapstone. Some of the good people to be sure!

    Dont hurt yourself BDF.
I thought stove burn-in fires were supposed to be small burns ... or was that a small burn?
