We were picking up a load of pallets the other day and I saw this crate. Figured it would be good to put some short an ugly pieces left from stacking. I had usually just burned them outside butvibhave so much pine and I prefer to burn it. So I filled up the box by the road and sold a bit of it so far. First one I sold for $5 then I changed the price to $8. It's still a lot cheaper then people buying the grocery store firewood, and in getting rid of these uglies that I would just burn up anyways.
The bin is 16" deep and 2'x4' comes out to 1/12 of a cord I think. Considering cost of a cord it's cheap but it's getting rid of pieces I don't want to deal with. Little cutoffs, crotches, and uglies that don't stack. I have well over a cord of this stuff and really don't use too much of it. I also have lots of pine and would rather burn that in the stove and firepit so seems like a good way to get rid of it.
I had a pile of uglies/shorts last year, a solid 3+ cords and I couldn't even GIVE it away. A few people called or emailed and got upset when I told them they needed to come get it, I didn't have time to load it up and haul it. I ended up just making a big bonfire with most of it. I did haul a bit home and I toss a few in the barrel when I burn the trash just to have a good smokeless fire. They would burn fine in the house, but it's just a PITA to store them or even fit them in the stove. Probably just needed to slap a $100 price tag on the pile and it would have been gone quicker than a cupcake at a weight watchers convention. haha!
Went to get flowers the other day and had to gas up. Didnt have the camera but thay had a big cage of firewood for sale and alot of it was gone at $9.99 each one bag each had about 6 splits in it
There's a big firewood seller about 10 minutes away that sells a lot of these uglies. I think they will sell better now during summer and fall when people are having bonfires. In Alaska do people have a lot of Bon fires @nate ?
Yeah, at least out this way. Most yards have a fire pit. I've sold wood a few cords at a time JUST for outdoor firepits.
Try it in December with a jacked up price and limited firebox quantity and see if some unprepared wood burner will pay you daily.
I had a roadside stand off the Glenn for a while. It was a DIY, put $$ in a bin. It went through about $150 worth of bundles ($5 each) and I only saw about $80... and some of that was from a few folks having no change or making a donation. I guess some people decided to grab an extra or two for their $5. It didn't seem to be as bad if I only set out 5-8 bundles at a time, but that meant I had to check on it every couple days and keep a supply of bundles handy. The stuff I had was regular stove length wood shrink wrapped and with a handle, like at the gas stations. Just they were 40+lbs for $5. I didn't put in "junk" wood because I feared it would make a bad name for me.
Ahaha. It's funny, I hauled a load of wood to a guy today and I told him I threw in some extra "short and ugly" stuff for campfires. He goes... "hey that's awesome... short and ugly, just like my wife". She was standing right behind him... whoops!
I keep them, uglies, punks and shorts. At the rear of my stacks I have a small 'pen' (of sorts) that I toss the odd stuff into. No particular order, just a pile. I use this stuff as my should season wood. I have a decent size wood box by my the stove and place them here during shoulder. it's also the same pile I pull from for the firepit wood. Sort of like the land of misfit toys, but with splits
The basement stove has a sort of odd sized fire box and burns wood at a very fast rate so I use my chunks and uglies in that stove when I am hanging out down there.
I bought a bunch of the wire crates on pallets and have 4 of them filled with uglies. But I just don't burn enough of them to keep. So I want to get rid of them, got plenty of pine too so will probably sell some of that.
