Talk about sticker shock.... Need to replace the air filter on my 572. $32 bucks? Holy smokes I tried blowing out with compressed air but really didn't do very much. Got a little bit of gunk off of it, but not very much. Guess I'll have to bite the bullet and get a couple, they probably aren't going to get less expensive. Has anyone ever tried washing one to clean it or is there an alternative air filter out there?
If you're not blowing dust w/ a dull chain, my Huskies aren't hard on filters at all. I went a whole year on the same filter on my 394, even milling a bunch. I have washed some of my 3 series filters. I've not seen your 572 one. I think they are similar to the 394/5's, style wise, and that's one I don't wash. I blown it off real good several times before replacing.
Everything is getting much more expensive now. I've found like The Wood Wolverine that saws are pretty easy on filters if you are not making dust and keep the chains sharp.
Most filters can be washed out. Use a good oil cutting detergent like Dawn dish soap and wash er out in the sink. Be SURE TO RINSE very well to get any soap residue all gone or it will attract fines. Sent from my SM-G930VL using Tapatalk
So true. Here, last year I paid .49 for a dozen eggs. Last week I paid $1.39 for the same dozen, this week I paid $1.79 for that same dozen eggs. Did the chickens join the union?
Kinda OT , but , I buy this stuff called LA’s Totally Awesome concentrated cleaner from the dollar store . $1 for a 20 oz spray bottle . $3 for a large refill jug . Doesn’t attack aluminum , cleans pretty much everything I’ve used it on ,including set in laundry stains . BTW works good on air filters to!
That's exactly what I have going on with my filter, fines from running the mill. I bought a couple of new ones, but if there is a way to salvage and extend the life of a filter, I'm all for it. I'll have to check that stuff out! Thanks for the tip!!
I’m not certain if Outerwear makes one for the 572 yet or not. There are a couple different air filter options, I see. The white mesh one and the old-school yellow fleece. The yellow one I know can be washed out with hot water and Dawn. It filters fines better, but it’s naturally a bit more restrictive. I would think the white one could be washed out the same way without any ill affects. It should be easier and less destructive actually
It does attack aluminum and if you use it on your siding it will pit it. Maybe not the first application but if left on there and not rinsed off enough, it will. Not to be used on raw aluminum rims either but works amazing on clear coated rims. Found a forum review of it and the guy said it burned right through aluminum foil. It is also caustic to zinc and magnesium so not to be used near saw cases I would say. LA's Totally Awesome Auto Degreaser, experience report
I’m sure it’s possible if it were left in it for too long, but not in 4 or 5 hours that I’ve had cylinders in my ultrasonic cleaner. It’ll take an old burned black cylinder and come out clean aluminum after that amount of time. It will take paint off cases if left in too long, but if you get it hot enough, it dissolves every bit of black gunk in about 5 minutes
Probably should have said “ doesn’t appear to attack aluminum . “ ,As opposed to just “ doesn’t “ . At any rate , I use it diluted ,and for my purposes ,I don’t let anything sit around soaking . But , thanks for pointing out what you found . It’s good to hear about ,and head off a potential problem .
Some more clarification, and this could be part of the misunderstanding. This stuff is what I use and I haven’t found it to react with any metal. Actually, the longer I leave aluminum parts in it, the brighter they are. I use it between full strength and 50/50 with water. As with any degreaser, regardless of solution strength, heat is needed to get rid of the greasy stuff. And the stronger and hotter you use it, the less time required. If I heat my ultrasonic to 80°C, in 5 minutes time there is no black gunk left on anything. Any longer than that and it will fade the paint. This stuff is a different story. Made by the same company, but it’s their Orange version. It will darken aluminum to a dark gray in under 10 seconds. But as far as cleaning parts, that is it’s biggest downfall. It’s actually a better degreaser than regular Totally Awesome. If you use a weaker solution with the same amount of heat, regardless of which one you use, it will bubble the paint before it gets rid of the grease. The best combination is to have it as hot as you can get it and use it as strong as you can justify. A 1-1 solution still works, but not as quick as straight. At 4-1, the paint will bubble off before the cases are clean.
Did you check the expiration date of those eggs. If it was the same dozen eggs from a year ago they are probably expired.
Tilex Mold and Mildew remover. Or Tylex Mildew Stain Remover. Spray them down so the filter element is saturated. Let stand for 10 or 15 minutes then wash out with hot water. Use an old tooth brush before rinsing off. Completely dry overnight in a warm dry place. It will be like new ! Don't use compressed air to clean a flock filter. It breaks down the element and blows holes thru it that let in sawdust particles . Which is real bad for your saw.
