It was in the ditch right by my neighbors driveway and he was worried about a storm blowing it down on his car. Didn't get any shots of it standing or laying down but I got some pics from today in the barn starting to split it. Got some pallets laid down and went to work. Got almost three rows done so far. All the smaller stuff is split and stacked and now come the monsters. I have room now to pull the splitter right inside next weekend if it rains to finish this off. 24" at the original cut. And 30" on the other end of that round where I cut it off at the ground. I won't know how much I have until I get it piled in the woodshed next spring. I'm guessing close to a full cord. This was pretty gnarly to split, unlike the ash logs I got delivered twenty years ago. Maybe it was a different species of ash.
Nice firewood in that tree. Its great when you can cut the entire tree up to your specs. Good on you for helping the neighbor! If 16" DBH its a half cord. 22" will yield a full cord. Harvested down to 4".
Nice score and good for you helping a neighbor. Ditch tree and probably more in the open usually will be tougher to split.
That's what I found odd. It was fully leafed out this summer and is in great shape, as is the other big one farther down the road at the other neighbors. I really don't know if the beetle is a problem in this area. I got a mixed load of logs last two years in a row (not this summer) and not one log in the bunch was ash. I should look up a map of Ontario and where the beetle is. Edit: I looked it up and most of Ontario is infected including my area.
Great score. Most of the ash in my area is almost beyond. I still find some on occasion but it won't be much longer.
Got the rest split today. Ran the carb dry on the splitter, blew it off with the air and filled the gas tank to the top. Stored in the garage until next year. Took the battery out of the mower too.
