They get pushed up from the freezing and thawing of the ground year after year. It's best to pile them up in the corner of the property and forget about them.

intersing in my area the town has been cutting trees for the ash borer and other in the way trees. They bring it to the dump pile it up and give permits to wood burners to take wood. I think it was 15$ a truck load don’t quote me on that.

Goodness that sounds like big beaurcracy at work.
I wonder what they pay to have it all chipped.
'Course, if there's otherwise no firewood in the area, it makes sense they'd get into the firewood business.

I've had family on my wife's side :zip: get trees taken down or severly trimmed. Never even considered if I would want the wood. It's not like they have no idea that we do 95% of our heating with wood.
Then again same people thought a tree service was going to pay them 3 Grand for the huge maple tree they have. They were seriously shocked that would not be the case:rofl:

Going back to Sandy, I remember driving around CT where the state and cleanup crews stacked wood on the side of the road. It's was a terrible site at the time. I didn't have a truck or trailer and you are not suppose to transport wood from CT to RI or RI to CT.

Another time more recent that was mentioned by billb3 regarding CT highway cleanup. They took down a ton of trees along the 95 corridor by the RI state line. At the time I was driving back and forth to a job. Early in he mornings you would see people with trucks and trailers scrounging up the logs or cutting them smaller to scrounge them before the crews showed up for the day. Whether they had permits to do this or not, I couldn't tell you, but man did they get a treasure trove of oak from just that one project.

Sounds like an in law thing to do:rofl:  Guess they’d prefer to spend money, cause the price is definitely cheaper to put it on the ground and walk away:hair: Many people think their lone yard walnut is gonna help them retire or pay for the kids college, but most of the time it’s probably littered with metal. There are people who may purchase your tree, but it’s probably not your local tree service!
