Are these stove temps normal??

I suppose it could even be my reloading technique. I normally don't let that much coaling happen and just put 3-4 pieces right on top of a hot coal bed. I've started raking the coals forward then sticking some big chunks in the back and loading it up. I'm thinking this might keep the entire load from igniting all at once. I know that's probably common practice for most of you but I've never had a stove where that mattered before. Got it loaded up now so I'll keep you guys posted.

Its late here, and I want to go to bed, but I have a large coal bed and raked them forward as well as opening the air all the way to try and hurry them down more. If I were to load now, it would go up like you explained really hot and fast. I will leave this air open for a half hour and then fill up for the night. It will still go up quick, so ill turn the air down enough for the night probably within ten minutes, as opposed to 20 min from a cold start. Another reason I rake the coals forward besides for trying to burn them down is to put a small round in the back of the stove, and that round should be the supporting coals for my morning startup. Good luck tonight, keep us posted. I think with a lot of these epa stoves, you can turn the air completely down, but it is not really closed all of the way. If you look into the doghouse when the stove is cool should show u this. Last year, I had to cover my outside air kit with aluminum foil when temps got scarily high.

Seems to have made a big difference! About 45 min into the burn and it is going perfectly. I was able to turn it to half after 10 min and completely shut it down 5 min later. Stove temps have been steady at 500F and flue at 600F with a nice lazy flame. Hopefully it was just operator error :fire:

Ok, well thats good. How long is your chimney, and is it straight up and out? When its much colder, my flu gets up there too, even when there are no operator errors. When your flu is high temp, does your flu thermometer tilt a bit due to the double wall pipes heating at different rates?

Well that might have done the trick. It burned perfectly last night and temps stayed right at the 500F stove top and 600F flue temp!

My chimney is 15' tall and straight up. It's not all that high but for whatever reason it has a lot of draft. Not a bad thing I guess. I've never noticed my flue probe tilting at all. I'll keep an eye on it next time.

Sounds like right about the same setup I have. I have gotton used to high temps. The norm for me is 625 cruising stove top, and 775 flue temps. My air is a smidge from being closed for at least 45 min and its cruisin

That makes me feel a lot better WS! My temps pretty much run the same so I think I will be fine. I lit it up this morning and packed it with 6 pieces of box elder. At about 85% full it was the biggest load I have put in the stove. It burned a little hotter but actually burned ok. It stayed around 550F stove top and 700F flue for a while but eventually took off. It maxed out around 650F ST and 800F FT. I put a small fan on it and took it back down to 600F fairly easy. I think I might look into getting a blower for it.

The blower will definitely take the temps down. I run my blower 24/7.

Yea I think I'm going to call Brian this week at Dayton Fireplace and see if he can order it for me. If nothing else it will be good to have just in case it gets crankin again.

I also am finding from another thread I posted in the wood hood that the box elder I am burning has a lot to do with the high temps I am seeing. Sounds like that stuff loves to burn fast and hot. Still glad I learned how to properly coal down a load and set up the firebox for reloads.
Guess it's all part of learning a new stove. ;)
