It's finally been cool enough to go play in the wood pile. This oak fell sometime this past summer. It had been leaning more and more for a few years until the supporting trees had enough. I've already hauled away and stacked all the usable limbs (two pictures). The trunk is about 55' long and for reference the two main limbs are 18" and 13". This tree fell at a good time as I just gave away 5 cords to a friend who heats strictly with wood and currently down on his luck, leaving me with only enough wood for this season. Start again I suppose.
Nice way to start replenishment. It'll take a few yrs, though. I hope you can find some other wood that dries quicker.
Thats a nice big tree there! Whats the DBH Sluggo? diameter at breast high that is. A 22" tree yields one cord. 16" half cord. That is harvested down to 4". Good on you for helping a friend.
Thank y'all for the nice comments. Definitely bittersweet starting over. DBH looks to be 36" plus/minus. About 12" diameter hollow center will detract from my take. Hope it doesn't run hollow too high. But to make up for the loss, there were two 10" sweet gums and a 12" white oak that got laid out when the big oak fell. Plus numerous 2"-3" beech trees which I will use. Good haul.
That is a very nice tree. Even with the hollow, should make some great wood. Starting over is tough, but glad you were able to help put your friend.
