Another thing that I need to invest in is a small portable generator; I was told to get one around 3000 watts running output. I have four small freezers and two refrigerators. I wouldn't run them all at once; the idea is that you run them long enough to keep the food safe and then turn them off. My friend in Texas had to throw away food during the Hurricane that hit; his freezer and refrigerator had to be dumped. My question is are there brands I need to avoid? What brands are recommended? I am seeing dual fuel; gasoline-propane, units as well. Should I avoid dual fuel units? Any suggestions are very much appreciated.
Not so much brand, but type...you really want an inverter type genny...they make much cleaner power that is less likely to take out your electronics (which many/most appliances have these days) plus the nice thing is that most of them have an "economy" mode that allows the genny to only run as fast and hard as it needs to meet the current load/demand...standard gennys have to run at 3600 RPM all the time to keep voltage and HZ correct..."gas hog" if you have to run days on end and it takes 5-10 gallons per day...
Thank you so much for this information. I didn't know about the inverter and yes, my refrigerator has a microprocessor controlled board.
We had a Honda eu2000 that ran a fridge and a freezer no problem. Just never tried both at once. That got stolen and now I have a Champion of about the same size . I've run the boiler with it in the Winter too. As you go up in size you also need to go up in fuel can size. Get a fridge/freezer thermometer. They stay cold for quite a while if you don't keep opening the door. Especially if they are full.
