Diesel truck discussion

Well familiar...we have an '08 and an '09 Odyssey...just went to do the 105k on the '08 right after I bought it with 103k on it...bought the timing belt kit and started to tear into it when I started seeing signs that someone else had been there already...turns out the former owner had it done already (bought it from the wife after husband died...he had the service work done and she didn't realize it) so now I have the kit for when the '09 needs its second 105k (its at 185k now...and still reliable)
I did however just do the valve adjustment on the '08 (with VCM) what a PITA! But it needed done, most valves were pretty loose...doesn't sound like a sewing machine anymore
Anyways, I'm totally on board with your thinking...even if you do spend $4k on yours for service, you'd probably spend close to that much in sales tax on a new one!
I'm nowhere near ready to get rid of my '03 250 Superduty (5.4) either...it has 180k but is in great shape and I have made out of state trips with it, no problem.

 

This is why i bought my '18 f250. Aluminum body, bullet proof motor..... i plan on having this truck for at least 10 years.

 

For some, that's how many years it takes to pay a truck off.

 

Purchase price 38k, 1 year old with 13k miles when i bought it. Should be paid off long before 10yr

 

Nah, i know you're not that foolish.

Just scary that someone would/could finance a (new) truck 84-120 months.

Was just thinking though.
This would be a good time to sell my '01.
I could probably get half of what i paid for it 15 yrs ago.

A few years ago I sold my 01 350 crew-8'-4wd p/s with about 140k for $18k and it was iirc around 31-32k when I bought it new. It was rust free (I oiled the underside) . Wondering what it would bring these crazy days?
A guy flew from OH to ME to get it. It spent most of its life down in MD and I didn't drive it here in the winter.

 

Yes…… picked it up Monday evening, you asked so here it is.

The Ford dealership mechanic found a blown fuse that goes to module that controls the powertrain, replaced it and promptly blew it again, tested the module and it checked out good supposedly. Took a while to find a wire rubbing and shorted out on the frame. I was pleased that they had running as soon as they did and the damage wasn’t to bad ($350 ish).

So I sicked em on the next issue that it had when I bought it. No cruise control, because if you put the fuse back in that runs the cruise (or maybe just the horn, not sure now) the horn would go off in panic/ alarm mode. He said they would check it out. He called back and said a switch on the master cylinder was faulty, I told him I thought it had had the updated wire harness with the jumper installed already. He said it has been done but there’s a switch that is faulty and telling the cruise the brakes are applied so not letting it go active. Switch is around $150. After that they could continue to diagnose on down the line if necessary. I gave him the go ahead to proceed.
A couple days later he called and said they have the cruise control working, but, if you turn the headlight switch to auto it will sound the panic alarm. But I can turn the headlights on and off manually and use the cruise. There’s apparently a problem in the “security module” I told him I could probably live with it like that at least for awhile. Total cost of repairs at a dealer was $576.06 (I think)
I have never taken a vehicle to a dealership for repairs before and was kinda bracing for a $1000 repair bill. So all and all I guess I’m satisfied for now. The cruise was nice coming home (67 miles)
I’m gonna have to do some internet investigation on that security module thingy, as that might have helped in the attempted theft of it over the 4th of July weekend

 

Or caused by the attempted theft....

 

The whole, no cruise and horn sounding in panic mode was an issue when I bought it right at a year ago now.

 

This 03 f250 has the least amount of miles of any of our vehicles. 189k
Wife’s 2010 Toyota Highlander has 205k miles, I think we got it 6 years ago with 110k on it.
My ‘04 Chevy has 210k miles owned it 11 or 12 years now and had 105k when I bought it for 10 grand.
They are all old enough that taxes are way less than $100 a year when renewing the license plates.
I have never bought a brand new vehicle, hell, I’ve never bought one with less than 100,000 miles. And I’ve never traded one in, “buy em cheap, use em up and go get another affordable one” ….rinse repeat!
Always had a hard time justifying spending more on a vehicle than I did on my first house. The wife’s Highlander broke that rule I think we gave either $16 or $18 grand for her Toyota

 

Getting out of the stealership for under 400 with a wire repair issue is very good. The people not only know what they are doing, they don’t over charge either.

 

I can sure can relate to not wanting to pay more for a vehicle than your did for your first house.

We paid $55,500 for our first home and 20 acres. It would be hard for me to swallow paying that much, or even more for a truck right now.

On the other hand if money were no object, I would probably buy a new 3/4 ton pickup with a plow to augment my fleet.

In the meantime, I plan to continue to drive my 15 year old truck that runs as good as the day I got it. I keep the underside and inner body panels oiled (no rust), and it well maintained so I can drive it at least another 7 years, or maybe more. If I had to put $3000 to $5000 into it all at once for some odd reason, I would do it in a heartbeat.

 

I prefer the simplicity of my 2000 f350. And with 193k it should outlast my need for it and is basic enough I can do most repairs myself.

 

got a problem with 03 again- injector, ficm,or varmints chewed a wire/s can't win. Mileage down a bit which is the the first clue, dead miss when starting up in the colder weather 2nd clue. Rebuilt injectors installed about a year ago ( 232xxx on the oem units). Likely run me close to a grand for repair ( no way am I going to attempt it )

 

Its the Cetane life though.....

 

‘06 Ford 6.0 cheap needs oil cooler, Egr cooler, $4k repairs…or ‘11 dodge and payments forever…? …and maybe repairs down the line. Hmmm…
