Today is world polio day. It is special especially because it has been almost wiped out wprld wide. Yet there are hold outs even in our country. Why anyone would fight getting vaccinated against this is beyond me. If anyone had ever seen what that disease can do to the human body it would seem a no-brainer.

In 1947 I was one of the unlucky ones who got it, or it got me. I was young but have so many unpleasant memories of it... Yet, I am lucky because even though I have been diagnosed with what is called post-polio syndrome, I can still walk and do not need crutches (most of the time) and do not have to wear braces.

Let us never forget the millions who had it. I wonder how many even remember this country also had a president with polio?

I figure my fathers younger brother who lives in Alabama is about your age Dennis and contracted Polio about the same time as you when he was a young boy here in Canada. He wore braces as a kids and has some lingering effects that caused him to walk with a limp his whole life but was able to be a successful mechanic and business owner. Due to the effects of polio and the wear and tear on his body as a mechanic, he now requires a cane or walker for stability getting around.

Polio was eradicated because everyone lined up to get vaccinated. The difference between then and now...Social Media :zip:

Well they are both viruses, but beyond that one bullet point comparisons for similarities pretty much jump the shark.

Not only that the polio vaxx was being developed and tested for many many years if not decades compared to the current vax. Also provides a far greater percentage of protection over 90% upwards to 99% over many many years. Compared to the current vax which lasts and has a protection percentage of....... o wait we don't know, still collecting data.....

X2, thanks for sharing Dennis. My boss's father had polio, he's told me much about it and some of the issues he's had growing up. He didn't have it terribly but had limitations and was affected by it for sure.

Polio can only go between humans. Covid can go between humans and animals. Then it mutates. Also covid is spread by the respiratory system, where polio is usually is only spread through contact of an infected person's feces. Covid's a lot harder to control due to this.

Which is why I don't think it will ever be eradicated like Polio! Covid I believe is an endemic, we will have to learn to live with Covid like we due with the Flu. Protect yourself & follow your doctors guidance. Just my .02 cents.....probably not worth that much!

Thank you everyone for reading and caring about this. I had hesitated about posting this fearing it would bring in comparisons with covid; it probably could not have been avoided. Yet I ask everyone to please keep this thread totally about polio rather than comparing. It is not the same thing so let us please keep them separated.

    Again, thank you.

Agree Dennis, I am really close to leaving this forum as every thread turns into I am covid vaccinated or you are an idiot for being covid vaccinated!

This place used to be fun, now we are real close to being Hearth.com

And I ask you to please bear with it Brian. That covid crap comes up no matter where you go. Shoot, I still have folks who seem to think covid killed my wife. No, she never got it.

Anyway, I would surely hate to see you leave. We need you.
