I cleaned the chimney today. The brush I got was the wrong size; I trimmed it down with some snips. I will get another one and pay attention to the size. I tried taping a bag over the bottom and it was working well until the drill snagged it. At one point I must have hit the reverse because my pole unscrewed on me. I still ended up covered in soot. I need to figure out a good way to clean from the bottom up. The crap in the chimney seemed to be dry soot for the most part. I made a mistake near the end of last season that I need to post about for some advice. I still need to clean the stove. I tried to take a photo but it doesn't show well further up the chimney like I would like.
That doesn’t look bad. Like you said it’s a little hard to see up there, but good job gettin it done!
I took that with the phone, my camera may have a better flash that will go further. I might take another one tomorrow.
I clean my chimney every season and use my own device instead of a brush. It is an old pair of jeans with the leg cut off. I fill the leg with golf balls and wire tie the ends. A rope is attached to one end and I drop it down the chimney and pull it up and let it drop again. Do this until the dust stops maybe 15-20 times. I have a loop on the rope so I know how far to drop it so it gets just to the top of the stove. I know some people used to use chains for masonry chimneys but would never attempt that on a steel one don't want to scratch it.
