Don’t look like ash looking at the round. Ash always has the little BB gun dent in the center. I don’t see that in the pic.

The hole/ pit in the center of ash isn't always there. Unfortunately I've been processing a lot of ash, and I've seen a few that didn't have that.

Could be. We don't have any here where I live, so this tree can give me fits trying to identify it.

The bark looks like ash. The twigs do too. If it is ash it will have the center pith as pictured. IMG_4760.JPG

After seeing the bark, I think you got ahold of a Sweetgum that split pretty good. That heartwood looks like one that has been dead for a while and the bark matches it. I split a lot of it and some can be a pleasure to split and others can be a nightmare. Ash has the X pattern to the bark. Check out pictures of the ash vs. the sweetgum. I hope that helps.

Sure looks like hickory (walnut family) to me..
Especially with the wind cracks around the growth rings

This id thread is going all over the place... The pile of splits look like a good splitting hickory, so do the cookies. The close up pic of bark on the split looks like hickory. But.....the pic of limbs and bigger pieces looks like gum. I've whopped on a few pieces of gum before w a maul....and 0 of them ever split like those in the pic....

I agree that this looks like sweetgum that has been dead for quite some time but just before it really starts to rot. It does tend to split almost like normal wood but would NEVER say any gum can be a pleasure to split.

I’m going with Ron Goedde on this looks kinda likes walnut to me. Walnut will typically have
1)bark that falls off very easily one it’s dead for a few months
    2) long flat/stringy sub-bark fibers
    3) may have lots of ~5 mm sharp pointed projection from the trunk under the bark
    4) limb ends are very blunt and larger diameter than expected
