Can anyone id this wood. A guy near me is giving it away on Fbook. Not sure if it's worth my trouble. Thanks.
Looks like red maple to me. Some of the furrowed sections are somewhat reminiscent of thornless honey locust. That darker core in the heart wood has me thinking maple though.
My votes for red maple also. Looks like you can park right next to it. I'd go get it before someone else does.
Thanks, fellas. I'm going to pick some up tomorrow morning. I want to try out my new splitter (also from Fbook marketplace)
Sugar maple. Go get it ASAP. High btu, splits easily (at least the ones pictured) & dries in a year. Heavy wood, but those are manageable size. Ill take SM over oak anyday.
Thanks again for your input, guys. Most of it was gone by the time I got there, but there was still enough to make it worth my time. I got these 2 stacks (just the fresh cut stuff)
I got it. I couldn't go get it yesterday due to work. I may go get more tomorrow, but the remainder of what's left is not in a great spot. It's in a small wooded area on a steep hill on the edge of a road with no shoulder. We'll see...
Looks like maple. Not quite right for red maple or norway maple so maybe hard maple. Sometimes it's better to grab it and ask later. You can always try to give it away again, but most wood is worthwhile having a little bit of. Maybe not willow. I'm not thrilled about poplar but that's likely because I'm blessed with lots of eastern white pine.
