    I've offered free trees to anyone who has asked but so far only one person has ever came after some. One guy was hot to buy some birch; said he'd like about 50 of them. Never showed up to get them though. I have given up but will still give some away if someone wants them.

    One other thing to consider is that some of those trees don't transplant well. I'm no expert, but I'm pretty sure the hickory, walnut, and some of the oaks are a tap root type of tree, and very difficult to move. Not sure how big of a tree/sapling you had in mind. My local extension office sells them for $1 per sapling. I planted 40 black walnuts a few years ago in "the best topsoil money can buy" from a local nursery. I thought that black walnut timber from 40 mature trees would be a nice boost to my retirement account in 30+ years, but no such luck. I have 4 trees left. Turns out that topsoil was a little to heavy on organic matter, and too light on topsoil. It didn't hold water at all. Despite mulching and watering, I lost most of them.
