Better than a poke in the eye with a blunt stick!

So yesterday I decided to start my spring collection of firewood and had few spare hours. We have had a very wet winter here in SE Australia and I set off to check out the local firewood collection area. leoht went out a few weeks ago and I thought I’d try my luck. It didn’t go as well as hoped and I drove around for ages and finally found one decent stick. I cut that up and loaded in the trailer and that was it for the day. It was only about half of what my daily quota could of been but with nothing good to cut and wasted time searching I cut my losses. I messaged a mate who works in the forestry dept and asked if they had started to fall trees for our collection yet and he said they were short on numbers at the moment and still cleaning up after a huge storm went through the region months ago. I’ll wait until he informs me they have started cutting before heading out again. I do have private property I can cut on but am waiting for it to dry out more as I don’t want to get bogged and mess up the farm. Anyway that’s still better than nothing in my books!

Something is better than nothing.

 

Absolutely boys not all was lost. Much better than going home with an empty trailer. Plus it was a bit of fun on the wet tracks.

How far out were you Matt, timewise? At least you didnt come home empty handed. What species of wood?

 

Looks fire damaged; even though some species there thrive with that

 

Only 20-25mins from home but spent a long time looking which I don’t normally have to do. We have allocated areas where the forestry dept cuts selected trees and then we cut them free of charge. Only allowed 2cubic metres per day max of 16 for season. 2m is a bit over a half cord. That is red stringybark which is a eucalypt. Good wood easy to light with good coals. Not as good as our yellowbox or redgum but easier to split but still good wood.

Good idea putting the garbage can under the end to catch the firestarter.

 

Yes it is burnt that lot so a bit messy. A lot of the bark fell off out there which is good. It did have a bit of a mud pipe up it from termites and it or the burnt bark did dull the saw a bit.

 

It was sloppy in spots that’s for sure. Yeah green bin is good kindling blue one is crap for green waste or compost.

Yup, as someone already said, a little bit of something is better than all of nothing. That’s a super nice trailer you got there!

 

Thanks mate it is a great trailer. I bought the trailer and built the cage myself. It’s a shame it doesn’t have a tipper like all the YouTube vids I watch with you guys in the states but serves me well.

 

Nice load for one stick! I like the trailer also, as one mentioned. The cage around the top is nicely done! Your splitter looks very much like a Dirty Hand Tools clone. I wonder if they have started manufacturing again under another name? Could we see some pics from different angles? Anyhow it looks a nice machine! Here's to many nice loads in the future.

 

thx mate the trailer is coming up to 10 years old but still doing it’s job nicely. I might shout it a birthday in the next year or so and respray as it’s got some stone chips and a little panel beating on the mudflaps where I’ve backed up a bit close to some wood lol. I got the splitter from my local Husky dealer and imagine like most things it comes out of a factory with the same splitter but 10 different names? It goes well.
