20211005_141027.jpg 20211005_141027.jpg Came across a good score today. Seems to be all maple. I will take it since there has not been too many good ones like this lately in my area, And this one I didn't have to cut any. I think I would prefer to cut, though. Most were cut under 18 inches, but alot weren't. I didn't take any over 18. I am familiar with silver maple, pretty sure this isn't. Leaves were of maple shape, but smaller and chubby I would say. Bark on the smaller diameters is gray and smooth, then the bigger ones it is rougher.
I had to do some downhill scrounging this time. Person that posted it said it was a small hill. It was a decent incline. First load I carried each round to the edge and tried to gently roll it down, as to not booger my truck up. Then I set up rounds to protect my truck as I rolled them down. Second load I was smart and brought a wheelbarrow. Fit 4 to 6 rounds in each load. First truckload it just tossed them in, second I stacked. She was riding a bit low. 2 nice loads of straight grained maple. I didn't clean it out by any means, alot of the bigger rounds were cut too lo 20211005_141027.jpg

    Nice scrounge!

Chubby leaves would have me guessing it's red maple as well.

Nice score there pricey! Looks like red maple to me. Cant say ive ever seen a silver maple growing "in the wild" .
I hate scoring precut wood in random length. (Although the last one had mostly correct lengths and it was on a paying job) Id be the opposite...taking the 16" and up rounds and cutting them to 16". Could you cut on site and leave the mess there? Nuggets too.
Ive scrounged on hills too. Always an adventure. The worst are steep roadside embankments.
How much you hoping to pull out of there?

Pics just don't want to upload today...Last one.
I could probably cut there. I have alot going on this week, so I won't be able to get Back there soon. I told the owner to keep it listed so someone else can share in the spoils. I have a decent amount to split and stack already on my property. I could probably get another 4 trucks out of there if I were to take everything. If it was oak, black locust, or black birch, I would have told them I will be back. I guess I am getting kind of wood snobbish. Lol. But I will probably watch it, and hit it up if I have time and maybe some help. My son is with football 6 days a week, so it is tough to get help.

Nice score, nice truck. Now I’d probably back up that hill and make an auto loader out of that truck :). Just set em on the tailgate and it’ll load itself.

Thanks. I wanted to get up the hill, but it was too steep and muddy. Also I don't want to take any chances with the truck. The last wood hauler I had was mired a couple times and then slid into my deck. After that one, I don't mess around.

You can make kindling out of the short rounds. Red maple splits real easy with a hatchet for the most part. I love how it burns and coals up nice and chunky. Dries super fast too. Nice score!!!

And yeah I agree with buZZsaw BRAD it's kind of annoying scrounging rounds bucked to random lengths. But if it's free and you are there to take what you want then it's all good! While I'm not anal about being perfectly uniform I don't want 8" splits and 20" splits either. I go with the 16" standard.

I have trimmed a fair share of firewood down to size. My splitter fits up to 26 inches. So I split, then stack in my trim rack, and run the saw down. I can do maybe 1/8 of a cord at one time. If I was desperate, I would take the longer cut ones too. The person still has the ad up, I will probably message them to see how much more was taken, and maybe go back next week. There wasn't too many short ones, maybe 1 in 10 that were about 12 to 14 inches. I don't mind taking those. I like to have a couple short splits mixed in my stacks to build a cabin fire in my stove. I also will split up those shorts for kindling.

Surprisingly here in northern Pennsylvania, I have only scored sugar maple once.

I’d trade you for oak or locust. Sugar Are plentiful!
