I am not familiar with the term. What does this usually refer to?

My guess would be the shorts or cut offs that aren't to length

But log is the first log from ground going up. Butt log is most of the time the best log in the tree. With smaller timber often times a butt log is all you get out of the tree.

Now that you have an answer here, ask him what he is referring too, just to make sure you are not talking in cross purposes.

Will do, he has been pretty slow to respond so far... I have a post on facebook. Decent amount of inquiries but maybe 1/10 lead to an actual sale.

When i'm cutting wood, i like to get the ''butt cuts'', or ''trim'' your right about the dense wood, tough stuff and some times pretty stringy as well. I've cut wood in area's where there was just ''butt cuts'' only, GREAT WOOD. Take wedges and maul! or your favorite Splitter.

I'd want to ask him how he's using the term.
He might want the flare end of a butt log that sometimes gets cut off, but otherwise that can be the best part of the tree. Usually not "discounted".
Then there are some butt logs that are real stinkers.

If there is any root flare on the butt log it is trimmed to match the diameter of the log. The flare would be cut off at the mill with the first pass of the saw anyhow. If you leave the flare on they don't stack on the log truck very well. The table top guys want the flare left on.

I wonder if the Butt log could be the stump. I know when I fall a tree, I cut it off, depending on the situation a foot to 3ft off of the ground and then cut the stump close to the ground afterwards. But a lot of people don't even mess with cutting the stumps off.
