Since getting my card, I've been getting calls asking if I've received the new Medicare Gold card. There isn't a Medicare Gold card. The person always has a foreign, to me, accent with an anglicized regular name. Today, it was Jennifer. Uh-huh right. They read back to you your name and address. They have your phone number. All pretty much public record. Then they ask for your Medicare number. Don't give it. Sometimes, I keep asking them dumb questions, just to waste their time. If I can get them to hang up on me, it puts a smile on my face. I finally got the " the extended warranty on your car is about to expire" scam call. Well, the answering machine did. Extended warrantees themselves are one of the biggest scams going. There must be a lot of suckers out there.
I have the problem under control. If we don't know the name or number on the phone ID, we don't answer it.
We do the same. The answering machine screens our calls. We got a couple scam calls today that involved a bogus amazon purchase being made with Visa. A foreign sounding voice is most often a dead give away for it being a spam call.
I got a dandy yesterday. Supposed to be some law and if I didn't respond then legal action would be taken. Even gave the option touch 1 on the phone to talk to someone who could help clear this up. Dingbats...
We get almost no legit calls on our landline so we have the ringers turned off. If it's important from anyone that matters they will call the appropriate cell phone. Anything legit coming in on landline will leave a message. Yesterday was a crappy day here so I was inside most of the day. I swear one call would barely hang up before the next one came. All I heard was the answering machine and hummmmm from each call.
One day on the way home from work, I was expecting a call from a local drywall supply company. The cell phone rang and I answered it cause it was a 717 area code and Hbg looking number. The guy new my name and started trying to sell me something. Then he realized I was driving and asked if he could call me back later since it isn't safe to talk and drive at the same time. I assured him it was OK since I had already opened my first beer. He hung up.
There’s a whole “industry” devoted to ripping off the elderly. We took over my aunt’s finances last year and it was an eye opener. She gets at least several letters week from charities requesting money. She had talked to many on the phone and offered to send money but luckily she didn’t have any credit cards. The charities had to mail requests to her but she only sent checks to just a few. There is a very large room in He!! for folks who rip off the elderly!
Same here, we never ever answered the land line (hell we don't even answer the front door). However we recently got rid of our land line (which I hated to do because I felt it was good safety for the kids to call 911) but I loath Comcast that much so we are down to just our 2 cell phones. I put a cheezy call blocker app on it that will only ring if your in my contact list all others go to VM. 9 out of 10 times scammers never leave a message. For the very few far and in-between legit calls they always always leave a message. If I know I am expecting a call and don't want to miss it I'll turn it off temporarily.
