New MS 391 on its 2nd starter coil

Anyone have any advice on if I make the dealer give me a new saw? I’ve got a 2 year warranty and the saw has ran once perfect, then needed a starter coil. After 3 months I got it back, I’d already ordered my own new coil since the dealer couldn’t get one, and it ran for one tree. Dead again. Needs a new coil. Yes. All new Stihl gas, not my own, each time. New plug. New gas filter. Yes it has spark. It’s firewood season and my 50 cc’s are doing all the work again. Thx for any thoughts on being firm with the dealer

 

Get directly ahold of Stihl, if the dealer doesn't care. Not much you can really do after that, and they know it. Everything is in low supply, and high demand right now. Are you bucking up huge fir in Wenatchee? If not 30 inch plus fir, I'd just get it done with the 50cc saws, and find another dealer. Good luck to you.

 

I would ask the dealer for a comparable sized demo saw till yours is fixed correctly. If no ask for a refund & look for a pro grade saw of similar size & put the refund toward that.

That dealer should keep you happy. 3 months to replace a recoil is insane. If he doesn’t step up, I’d contact corporate.

 

Tell him you want a saw that runs or you want you money back. (He probably won't give you your money back)

 

Is this the recoil ("pull starter") or the ignition coil you are talking about? What is happening to it?

 

The little saws work great but I got about 10 Big firs hiding that are this years blow downs and 64 cc’s is soooo nice for this. Thx for the hep’nnn

 

Oh. Ignition coil. Exact same issue as out of the box. Ran for an hour. At 3/4 throttle. Then won’t start the next day. New gas. Each time.

 

I like that thought. Only a couple hundred more and we are there. Not a bad idea. I gave away probably 5 c. Last year to grandmas. Had a great time

 

The game with the tiny Husky’s is run then fast and sharp and they never fail me but I gotta sharpen usually twice a truck load since it’s all in the burn. It’s year 3 though after the burn so most is getting bug eaten so it’s getting pretty messy and not as quality of fir as before. I mean I could cut Pondos but wood snobs are wood snobs

 

I read starter coil and thought recoil. Never heard it called that.

 

Did you replace it with oem?

 

I'm saying no...and some (most?) of the aftermarket coils are crap.

Taking it in today to see what to do. I’m a super nice guy but it’s firewood season and considering i spent all spring getting ready and summer when it was hot making sure all logging items are perfect and truck and trailer running top notch to lose time on my big brand new saw makes my blood boil when the dealer shrugs there shoulders.

 

Well, as strange as it may be, this almost has to be 2 bad coils, as the whole ignition system is contained in it, so really no way to damage it in my opinion, unless the flywheel comes loose and hits it, or maybe if the airflow was cut off somehow it could overheat...but I don't know how that could even happen, and in all likelihood the engine would get hot and seize before the coil melted down...

 

Yup. Correct. Thank you. Now she bucked 2 huge Doug Firs and broke in while running. Runs awesome. Did the bucking in no time. 4 truckloads! Thx folks

 

Flywheel? I’ve seen a couple over the years that had insufficient magnetic strength to produce the flux required for good spark. New flywheel, problem solved. Would seem odd on a new saw, but just thinking out loud.
