Today is the first day of fall

I like the fall months but lets not rush it !

Cooler days and nights when you can enjoy sitting outside by the fire is great.
The white stuff that follows when fall ends , not so good.

 

1st day of fall here brings the first rain we have had in over 3 weeks. Trees are shedding leaves and pine needles like no tomorrow with the gusty winds. Temp was 63 2 hours ago and now down to 56. They said we are supposed to get 45-70mm of rain by tomorrow night. Yup, fall has arrived here too.

 

Ash trees here are dropping leaves. Thankful they are still here casting shade.

 

I was doing some cutting in my woods today and noticed an extreme lack of acorns. Some years walking in the woods was like walking on ballbearing. Not this year. What kind of acorn crop do other of you have this year?

 

We are loaded with them.

 

Does that mean you will have a hard winter and I won't?

 

They are saying above normal sept/oct/ 1st half november. Come december we are supposed to start getting a winter we have not had for the last 2 or 3 years, Lots of snow and cold periods through out.

 

My yard is surrounded by large red oaks. The few acorns that have been falling are very small and look underdeveloped. I’ve hiked a few separate areas with a lot of chestnut oak and those acorns seem both abundant and large. I’ll have to see what the white, black and pin oaks in the area are producing.

 

I have both red and white oaks and very few acorns of either one.

 

First day of autumn and I turned the AC on this morning. Its humid. Hopefully after the front rolls through it will get cooler.

No oaks in my woods. I'll have tp ask neighbor. Paw paw fruit is abundant, and walnuts and the chestnuts are good size, if that has anything to do with anything.

 

After a hot summer, today was spent getting soaked by rain shooting sporting clays. Arrived home and turned on the furnaces. Have the boiler shed partially loaded.

red oak acorns are rather large this year. Not necessarily a lot of them though. Although the squirrels and deer could be chowing down as fast as they fall, but I don't think they're dropping on their own yet. No deer presents either. One of the squirrels does something weird. It chew the whole end of the branch off - the whole bunch of acorns and several leaves and haul the whole thing off. I'm not finding many of the ones that have/had a worm in them. Maybe they start dropping later.

Are the creepy poisonous critters starting to slither and crawl around yet ????

 

Well I haven't seen a deer climb a tree for acorns. Yet. But from the amount of poo under oaks in the back yard they spend quite a bit of time there doing something. It can't be just a coincidence they just happen to spend a lot of time there overnight when the acorns are dropping. And they don't when they're not. For many years the hostas were safe from the deer. Now either their tastes have changed or their hunger has, or maybe global warming has changed the taste of the hostas. Well there you go, it has to be global warming.
