Hey guys I don't know if I need a new thermometer or not. This one was here when I moved here a couple years ago, I don't know how old it is, and this is the only experience I have. The thermometer is a condar brand. Should I get a new one and should I get the same kind or are there better brands? TIA

One thing you can do for a rough guide is to test it in your oven, say at 500 degrees. Condar seem to be the best I've found.

A better way is an IR gun. Harbor freight has a good one that is not expensive and they can be very helpful.

You really can’t test this type of thermometer like that. Or really any other way except against a known good meter.

The standard condar probe meter is not designed to be fully immersed in the hot fluid or air, it is calibrated for just the probe to be immersed and conduct heat out through a steel wall to the bimetallic coil out in the cold room air that will react in a repeatable way.

Calibrate it by resetting it to room temperature when everything is cold. Condar has instructions for that. If you’re not confident then replace it. The last time I bought one it was only like 30$. The probes corrode over time, my coil broke while I was resetting the zero.

I didn't have much luck with my cat probe. It worked for a month or 2 then fell apart. I just took it out and put the plug back in the hole. I see no need for it.

I have one but it's 5 years old and needs recalibration and is burnt to a crisp... The cat probe hole has been screwed closed again by Woodstock from their shop when I had my stove repaired so I think I'll just keep it that way and run the stove as is without the probe.

i'm using that probe for my pipe, not sure if it's a good candidate for you, look at auber instrument, model AT200CHIM or AT210-COMBO or (maybe there are other options)
