I was out putting up a trees stand and notice that this dandy white oak did not survive the summer (center with dead leaves still on) and right next to it a dead black birch. There should be some nice lumber in the w.o. and a whole lotta BTU's from both of them.
That would be totally reasonable. However, white oak lumber and especially the stave market are very favorable right now.
Good question. I still have to go measure the dbh on the oak. Obv. the birch is too small for lumber and will go 100% as firewood. For w.o., cherry, walnut, I'll go down to ~12" if it looks straight and clear. Red oak, poplar, red maple I would like them to be bigger. If the oaks are 20+" I'll start to think about quartersawing. Also, I currently have a gross excess of oak tree tops on the ground already that are waiting to be turned into firewood, so I can afford to take as much for lumber as possible.
