It's nice to have a neighbor who owns a tree service. He called and asked me if I wanted a few red oak chunks. I told him "yes indeed, you know where to dump them". A little splitting work is in my future. They'll be great in a few years.

I love red oak. It accounts for about 75% of the wood I burn. The rest is white oak and hickory. Congrats on the score.

Nice! Never burned any red oak that I’m aware of.

It is. And there will be a few beers of his choice in his future. It's how we roll. :pete:

Best time to get free oak is three years ago.
    Second best time is today!

Actually, I think second best time would be like two years ago or so.

But today is pretty good too!

I split up a red oak log today and I’m still impressed by how easy and clean it splits. I said to myself: self you need to bring home more red and less white Oak.

Hard to beat free Red Oak. Plus it has that smell. I know some people hate it. But I love splitting it.

Nice score for sure! I've got about 35 cord of Red Oak here to process. It's nice wood to split & burns decently. I actually prefer White for the btu's, but Red is way more common here & dying from wilt.

There were three logs (he called them chunks, lol) - I had to cut them up, but no complaints here. There was also a bunch of smaller logs which I cut and split - in the photo those are behind the splitter. Cutting to firewood lengths takes a tree guy's time, and I am happy to get whatever is offered regardless of length.

Of the ~12cord in my woodyard, I'd say 75% of it is red oak.

Get all you can, if you have the space for it to sleep for a few years.

Most of what I burn is red oak. It’s tough to beat if you can give it the time to season right!
