Back in May im delivering firewood when a guy watching me strikes up a conversation about burning wood. Right up my alley. I mention black locust and not only had he heard of it and burned it, but he could ID it too. Only time ive ever met someone (other than FHC) who knew this. Well he proceeds to tell me about a pile of BL in a yard not far from where i was. I went and checked it out after and sure enough a mound of BL in the yard. I stopped and knocked. Rental property (local university nearby) and the father of one tenant owned the house. She called and i got the okay to cut and take. This was back in May (please dont revoke my membership for this FHC ) and im finally getting there. Back right up, buck and load. Cant get much easier! The wood was from either tropical storm Isaias or the local tornado August of last year. The bark was falling off like meat from baby back ribs...and none of that putrid stench either! Took my time 2.5 hours cut and load. 500i feasted and more saw than i really needed. Brushed the schmutz off most of the rounds. My locust mania has flared up again. Knew i shoudve gotten the shot! Still at least another PU full there yet. A few decent lengths i may save for milling. A few oak logs ill leave behind
Dunno about the new saws but i like the way you think. It was a nice dry day and getting better for hoarding! I had a primo hickory score lined up but the guy changed his mind when i called to come over! Had to cut something!
Awesome! Is that 62cc? I got all the kinks out of my 036 Pro finally. Actually had it with me to use today, but i guess a 500i trumps everything else! Ive thought of what saw i would get next...MS400? 066/660/661? 241, but still not sure. I should sell a couple first. Any pics Chud? Post a thread in the OPE section.
400! Big saws are nice to have when you need them, but I’ll use 50-60-70 more than anything. I’ll get a 400 or 460 next. Was prepared to get a 288 last night, but it was tired and expensive. Tried out a 357 and a 460 and they were beat. A buddy picked up a 150 for $120 at a trading post. Anyway I found someone cleaning out there basement that had a nice 034 Super cluttering up things.
A 150 for $120 is a steal unless it was dropped out of a tree or toasted. IME tree guys like the 201. Ever run one? I have not.
The only homeowner saw I’ve ever run is my dad’s Craftsman. I’ve used a 201 a bunch. My buddy will buy any saw he can get a deal on. The 150 had good compression and fired right up like Stihls do. It will make a good light weight limber.
My bad. Worded it wrong. Have you ever run a 150? How does it compare to a 201? My top handle 201 runs nicely with the 12" lightweight bar that it came with.
The mania is alive and well Joe! Its going to be a great time for the next many months! I have several sources for BL lined up!
It is, but have never used it with 16" bar. I love "one handed" bucking with it. Safely of course! Great off a ladder too (i dont climb). 194T has a 12" too. My 201 rear handle has a 14" bar.
True, but from the looks of it the wood was being left as its been there for a year. The yard was unkempt...tall weedy grass, shrubs not trimmed, house needed work. A lot easier to clean up a pile of bark than a mound of logs. I think tree services discount their price if they can leave the wood behind.
