Anyway here's the pics of the saw and I'll let you know how it behaves this weekend !! As for the land yep it does have road access so it's good to go there, my only concern is water - if my buddy goes for it I'll have to get a survey done and see if there is enough water for a well. I f there isn't it's a no go for me. The bar at least needs to be filed/deburred. Looks like it’s been getting hot. Does the bar oiler work? No oil would cause a no cut situation too.

So how’s it work with chain on correctly?
    Can’t go wrong with 261

So happy davecason that this is working out well. Now a change of sprocket will be in order real soon.

On the 261 being worth it, if you have never had the chance to compare them, you will certainly be amazed. It is like getting out of a Volkswagen beetle and stepping into a brand new Mustang.

Same exact thought here as well.

Stihl, Husqvarna, Makita, echo all make great saws.

For $179 ( or less if you happen to be part of a great group and a bit lucky ;) ) a Stihl ms170 works very nicely. I have used the 170 more than my dolkita in the past few months, but then again I really try to not do any firewood work in the summer.

Davecason if the chain is spinning on the bar then it should be cutting period. So like others have said either the chain was on backwards or something else to do with the chain is off. Maybe on your used chains that you had sharpened need to have the rakers lowered so the cutter gets into the wood better.
The bar like what was previously said is only a guide for the chain.

As far as Poulans go I had one of those wild things at one time and it was not a bad cutting little saw.
There was a time when Poulan made a lot of great saws. I have about 30 of them and use them all the time for falling some good size trees.

    Hey Guys

OK well despite my crappy photography skills - yep the oiler is happy and I'll be heading out to the camp this Labour Day weekend up here in Canada so I plan on putting some wood up in the shed as it
does tend to get a bit nippy when its -38 C (-36) out there, so I better start now.

Since my dumbass has now copleated that whole advanced mystery class on "how NOT too put a chain on backwards" we'll see if it cuts ..... something tells me my poplar is going down.

I'll let you guys know how it goes and again, thanks a butt load for all the help and suggestions! I'll file a report next week ! :)

    Cheers'

Speaking as somewhat of a new(ish) chainsaw user:

I started with my dad's old Craftsman chainsaw. My current 2 are Stihl, 1st corded electric and the 2nd is the Farm Boss, can't recall the numbers on the side of it at the moment but I think it's in my signature below when I post this. I'm not completely sure I'd give a good enough description between the saws I've used, not enough experience with them. I've used a Poulan Wild Thing once and thought it was actually a very capable saw.

Getting the chain going in the right direction will be a big win, but don't let that sting your ego. Everyone makes mistakes.
Speaking of mistakes- there isn't much margin for error when it comes to operating chain saws or firearms. If the Poulan keeps running and cutting, I'd say keep using it. But I would recommend putting some cash down on protective equipment. Steel Toe Boots, chaps, glasses, gloves, ear protection- and anything else I'm leaving out.
If you haven't already, spend the money on the safety gear and get the nice new saw later.

Lol. That's why the manufacturers put the pictogram of how the chain should go on. In the wild thang's case, it has a double pictogram as you posted. ;). Screenshot_20210831-202853(1).png

Bet you'll never do that again though:thumbs:

I also own a 261 and a great saw. Being a chain saw user its very advantageous to know how to properly sharpen your chain. Take some time to learn how to sharpen. The best chain saws are pretty much useless with a dull chain.

Skip chains are okay for longer bars. Try a full chisel chain if the wood you are cutting is not dirty.

Yep, its true folks ....... if yer dumb enoug to put the chain on backwards - it won't cut bupkis !!! However it IS a pretty easy fix if you take the chain off and put it back on backwards again ( so yes, two wrongs make a right) it works ! Here's proof!

Thanks again for all the tips and suggestions and yep, there is going to be a STHIL 261 in my future !
