I put my Oregon Mini Grinder for sale.

I need something that can do .404 0.080" gauge a bit better.

The smaller sharpener I have works fine for the saws, but I can't really do my processor chain on it well. It will grind it, but I'm not able to clamp the chain in well and it's just too big for the smaller wheel.

Oregon 510a or the 511ax.. which is the bigger one? Anyone know if it can do harvester chain or just normal 0.050-0.060 widths?
    Like this one?

Is the Northern Hydraulics unit the same as the 510a?

I can get that one for around $175 shipped, or the real one is about $100 more.

I do maybe 5-10 chains a week so I don't need anything setup for production sharpening, but I'm not going to deal with cheap China built garbage either.

The 510, 511a, & 511AX are all the same size. They normally do not grind .404.

But there is a vice available for some of them (I know the 511A) that holds and centers harvester chain.

IIRC the Northern Tool Grinder does not do .404 unless you use the .404 vice from a Oregon.

He Dex and swags use a Timbertuff machines i believe. Think it can be had for around $100.

And I have heard that there is a northern unit that is an oregon copy. Not sure which model copies what and if all models are cooies or not...if should look just like it.

If you are talking about the following post:

Then that's my fault. I corrected the name from "Pellet Pete" to "Pallet Pete" and added the tag so he would get a notification. I'm sure he'll be by shortly to answer your question.

For those wondering why we have been inserting @ signs in front of usernames all of a sudden......

You have to manually add it in. (Type the @symbol and start typing the members name, the software will offer suggestions until you get it narrowed down to the person you are trying to contact) It's not common for a mod to add tags to a member's posts but I will if it will help a fellow member achieve their goal. ;)

I think I'm gonna order the Northern Hydraulics unit and mod it if needed. I can't find any solid info aside from $2000 Silveys being able to do 0.080"

    Yes sir... :)

It's a feature anyone can use. If you want to tag someone so they see a post? Just put the @ and start typing their name. A list will come up as your typing and you can either finish typing (if you know exactly how it's spelled) or choose from the drop down menu

    Easy Peasy...

Northern makes a nice unit. Let us know how it works Nate!

The difference between the Northern Tool and some Timber Tuff grinders is the color.

I was looking on Ebay and there was a Timber Tuff that was a lesser machine than the usual Northern Tool grinder.

The timber Tuff with the metal vice is the one most like a the Northern Tool

Well the Timber Tuff lasted for about 15 chains.

The pin the head pivots on is supposed to be pressed in for a tight fit, but it's not. It came out on me once already, and keep walking. It's got enough play now that I can move the head side to side easily 1/8", probably more like 3/16". Try sharpening a chain with that kind of error!?

Luckily I ordered it through Amazon so they are taking care of me.

If anyone is wondering, if does 0.080" fine as well as down to 0.050". 0.043" is too narrow, though I made it work on one chain I had to do.

That sucks, you must have been unlucky and got a bad one.
Are they sending you a new one?

Yup, I just have to wait for the new one to show up to send them the old since I don't have the box. Hopefully it's not an issue again. Works fine other than that.

I'm not a huge fan of the vice, I might change it would to the other style that Oregon uses.

If your running the same gauge (bar gauge), then the chain lock/vise, can be set up to work pretty nicely.

You just need a small Allen and adjust the back nut, so that you only need to flip the lock a little. Mine was way out of walk when I got it. Had to fine tune it for .050. May have been fine for .063, but I needed to really hit the lock arm hard to get the chain to stop. Now, it only takes a small light push and it's locked down.

Glad Amazon is taking care of you. It had to have some issue wrong with it. To many others have used them for much longer with no issues (well, they need tweaked a little to be set up properly).
