Usually like to load up the indoor wood bin before September, so it is done and I am not scrambling when it gets cold, plus I figure it gives that wood a chance to dry out since Pennsylvania has moved to the rain forest region this year. 20210829_165200.jpg 20210829_165205.jpg 20210829_165554.jpg 20210829_165557.jpg 20210830_222408.jpg I first loaded in some elm, because I never really empty the bin during the winter, and I figure that would be good shoulder season wood for the spring, when I want to empty the bin. Then I topped it off with some ash. I didn't pack it to the ceiling because I put a fan in the hatch to suck air from the basement, and draw out any residual moisture.

    Smart thinking using the fan.

Nice feature with the basement door/window. Will make life a lot easier on a sub zero morning.

Get it done before it is needed and things seem to go smoother. I'll be moving some wood soon too.

I'll be setting up and filling my deck wood rack over the next couple of weeks.

Nice little storage area. Good idea with the fan. I see you had help. Does he like anything firewood or is it a "job" for him?

Is that purpose made for firewood or repurposed from a former coal bin ?

Looks good, I like the coal door!

The weather is looking good for me to get my wood stashed this weekend.

I absolutely love it. It used to be a coal chute door. And from the inside bin, it is a 18 foot walk to the wood stove, with no stairs. The only time I have to be outside in the cold is to top off the bin about every 2 or 3 weeks.

I think it's just a job for him. He does like running the chainsaws and splitter, but only if I ask him to help me. It's tough this time of year with school and a strict football schedule. 5 days of practice, game on Friday. The only day he gets off is Saturday. Then he tries to give me a BS story that coach wants them off their feet for a day. I say he can help me for a couple hours, build up more strength.

It was a coal chute door. The house was built in 1979, so I guess oil heat was out of the question with the oil crisis going on then.

You got that right with PA moving to rain forest region. After labor day I'll start to stage the firewood

Great set-up! I'm envisioning in my head a conveyor system to bring wood in easy. Just need a squirrel size treadmill, .

We're going to be floating after today. :hair:

We too have brought a little wood up, more to move wood around than to have it handy..... Don't want too much by the house just yet.
I'm betting it will be 2 or 3 more weeks before an evening fire is built....when days don't warm up to 70 inside I reckon.
But, we have a cord handy, and an unheated closet space to fill when it gets cold.
Everything in me wants to lay it all in now while its nice.....but the fear of various pests makes me wait till later.

I spray some insect and spider killer about every foot or so of the stack, then I spray the perimeter of the wood bin real good. I am thinking of just topping it off real good in the early spring so I don't have to worry so much about it in late summer, when all the critters are active. I wasted alot of time examining every stick of wood for spiders and such.

And those pests are the reason we don't store wood in the house.

    Same.
The closet is on an unheated porch, everything else is outside. Only a day's worth at a time is kept indoors by the stove.

    X2.

If there's a blizzard forecasted, I usually bring in a day's worth of splits. The rest of the time, 3 steps away, outside on the deck rack.
