Playtime last winter with the friends poodle and shepherd. Early spring by the pond. Trunk husky. I did not ask her to get into the trunk.....
We had a dog that would get into any vehicle if she could come with us. As we only had a car at the time and the backseat was full of kids, she would happily get into the trunk when we headed out for a hike. campinspecter made sure that she could get enough air while being in there. She also like to travel in our small airplane. Her favourite spot was not the cargo area; it was the seat behind me. She would lay her head on my shoulder as if to say - trade places with me.
Someone sent this to me after I lost Ginger. Seems fitting for Larry and Molly and everyone else that’s been through it. Owl
Thank you and other for the many kind words. I also found some words that say it all well: "I didn’t ‘put him down’. I lifted him up out of his pain, I let him go, and I’ll hold his sweet spirit in my heart."
Oh my, Now my eyes are so wet I can hardly see. It does capture the spirit and feelings of having a fur friend. I didn't know it was possible, but the older I got the more attached I became.
Our Holly was cleared of heartworms from a blood test this week. We are very happy as the treatment took quite a physical toll on her. She did gain a few pounds but her walks have increased and she is not so winded. We almost adopted a second dog last week. She was another mountain cur mix from MS. She sounded great, still a bit young at 9 months and 42 pounds. She was still available after two weeks, which seemed strange. We were contacted by the adoption agency and they felt having two young female dogs was not a good fit. They would most likely fight over resources and cause a lot of tension. I put my trust in their experience. They encouraged us to keep looking and inquire about others. I had plans to move the woodpiles, build a wood shed with enclosed run behind it. We put some time into it planning and thinking, but it was not meant to be. I guess I freed up some time this fall to do other things.
All through this COVID ordeal the wife and I stayed close to the homestead. We are fortunate to have a wonderful, extremely smart dog who is easily trained. My wife, a natural animal lover and trainer of horses and dogs, spent untold hours getting this dog to learn and perform over 135 different tricks. She then had her tested by the national association (never knew before there was such a thing) which recognizes canine trick dogs. Low and behold they obtained the associations "Championship" title, and now have started on the next leg being "Grand Champion". Anyone who says you can't teach a old dog new tricks better look again, she will be a 9 yo come this december. She also is into the "dock diving" game as well................
