This log has been here for close to a year and judging by the bark I thought it was sugar maple. As I started cutting I was surprised at how dark the chips were and I knew it wasn’t sugar maple. As you can see, the bark is peeling right off with ease and it’s kind of sinew like as you would see in tulip poplar. The wood is fairly heavy but not as heavy as any oak would be. I was thinking some sort of elm but it did t smell like any elm I’ve dealt with. So aside from firewood, what do I have here?

Looks "locusty" based on the bark. But you say it's not really heavy like oak, so that doesn't have with locust. Black walnut? Give it a split and post up a picture.

That’s what I thought at first but it’s much darker than any sugar maple I’ve ever seen before.

Red elm. It’ll be a little stringy if the bark is just falling off. In 2 years it’ll split easily

Looks like elm to me too. But I have seen some trees in town down here that has similar bark. Ginko, I think, very yellow leaves in the fall.

Very straight grained and easy to split. Has a strong earthy smell.
