I split and checked my most recent wood today. There's older stuff in the shed that'll get burned this year. The hemlock and alder over 20% will sit another year. That batch of hemlock ranged from 18-28% depending on split size and if it had bark. The alder over 20% was cut by a county road crew and is longer than the wood I cut myself. I attribute the slow drying to being 18" or so. Another 4-6 weeks and I'll move some of the stacks into the shed.
campinspecter likes the hemlock and fir to sit two years before burning. Ours is undercover for those two years as well.
That's dedication to your craft/hobby right there. Impressive. I had aspirations of keeping track. I add comments to my Excel spreadsheet but pictures with dates is top notch.
Thanks for the idea to keep track of the dates and percentages of my wood stacks, way better than using my failing memory.
I know the dates because I write the month & year on the end of a few splits in each stack, usually with a couple initials for the location.
One of the things I dislike about hemlock is its inconsistency. Sometimes it's ready in one summer, sometimes it requires 2. Fir is almost always below 20% in one summer and won't go below 16-17% even with 2. The only fir I've had that really required 2 summers has been tight grained old growth, which I rarely get.
