Quite a few of them have gone on to their reward over the last few years. I saved a special woodchuck chunk of wood for three or four years that I used once the trap did its job. Lay this trap in the tunnel, cover it a little bit with leaves....CAREFULLY! When the varmint tries coming out, bingo! Be sure the jaws have clearance to operate when tripped and remember to anchor the trap to the outside of the tunnel so you will be able to retrieve it. Ya wouldn't want any stray or curious dogs to get their paw or snout trapped.
This is so true. If you just throw a smoke bomb down the hole that you see it'll just run out the other hole(s) and then come back once the smoke clears.
Ground hogs have a pretty good tunnel system with multiple exits. If your in the city is very likely there will be an exit in your neighbors yard. Unless you can find and plug all the holes your going to have a nearly impossible time trying to eradicate. The best thing I found to get rid of them is Loki. in this picture he spent 11days from sun up to sun down watching that hole till he caught it
One of the forums I frequent had a recipe in one of the threads about groundhogs. It may have been Hearth or OPE, maybe it was here I can’t recall.
When I was a kid my dad insisted on having my mom cook one. I don’t recall it being terrible but we didn’t do it again. Haha
Every time I turn around I'm posting something dumb on here I think... We have a groundhog that lives under our wood pile- I kind of like him. actually- if I could get him to make friends with a possum or two I'd like them to move in under there as well.
cb caps in 22 rimfire and -quieter than some of the air guns around now but i have used those also. gotten a few with the bow, and of course the pups always are willing participants. had a brittany spaniel, wood chucks were his favorite toy.
Get a chicken coop and the possums and coons will follow, or toss food scraps in the yard. A bowl of dog food will bring them in. They will come as long as there is something to eat.
I hear ya. Have a family of cottontails that made my front yard home this year. I enjoy it. Every time I go outside I have to walk by them. Mama is pretty accustomed to me. I can walk or drive right by her and she won’t move. Just looks at me with a mouth full of grass and keeps chewing Even the dumb beagle leaves them alone now. It’s become a good reason to let the grass grow a little longer too. Wouldn’t mind at all if a few possum and chucks decided to move in either. There’s plenty of room for everyone.
Groundhog are very good eating, but tuff to skin. Vegetarians make good meat! After skinned, soak in salt water over night. Drain, roll in flour with a little salt and pepper. Fry in cast iron skillet with bacon grease til browned. Wrap in alum foil and bake at 300 for 1/2 hour. Falls off the bone and delicious. Use the drippings from the pan to make a tasty gravy. Enjoy.
My father cooked up a chuck one time in 2010 or 11. It was pretty good. I was told that there are scent glands you need to be sure to remove. How to Clean and Skin a Groundhog (Woodchuck)
No room for ground pigs, skunks, coons or possums around here. Ground pigs are destructive, wait till they move/attempt to move under your house. Possums are nasty dirty varmits Coons crap all over my wood piles & try to rob my peaches & pears, dig around in my garden. Skunks are shredding my yard looking for grubs & trying to take up residence in my wood pile in the shed. But to each there own. Good luck with your endeavor.
