I was doing some sanding on my deck this afternoon and noticed some spots where the sap is still sticky. The deck boards were installed over 40 years ago. One would think the sap would have dried by now. Has anyone else seen this on old boards that have been outside in the elements for decades? The end of the toothpick shows where the sticky sap is.

That says something about wood for sure.

Could it be because a sealer was used meant to keep moisture out also held the sap in?

It also could be the wood was not allowed to dry good when it was first put down. The deck had been stained before we bought the house and the house was about 7 years old when we bought it.

The boards look good for 40 y/o. Possibly the friction heat from the sander softened the sap.

I have a bench that we stained earlier this summer. The one board has sap coming to the surface. I have no idea of how old the bench is.
