Snake ID?

Couldn't get the best pic but it was sunning in the driveway before it went into the wood pile.

 

I would guess it to be a common water snake. Water Moccasins have bodies that are VERY thick and heavy for their length, and short, thick tails. This snakes head doesn't look like a venomous snake.

Sweet. Im not too good at snake identification. After the dog was sprayed by a skunk last night I was not ready for more animal adventures.

 

The only thing I know is to tell if it poisonous is look at the eyes. Round eyes non-poisonous. Slated, go the other way.

 

Cobra's, mamba's and tiapans all have round pupils...

 

So kinda like a close-up eye-to-eye exam?

 

According to my wife, that is a noperope.

 

Growing up I was told if the snakes head is as wide as it is long to stay away from it. I still go by that rule. Lucky for me there’s not a lot of venomous snakes around here.

 

North American Pit Vipers (Copperheads, Rattle snakes, water moccasins) have elliptical pupils.
