Homesteading Chicken Coop Build, Chickens, Pond, Garden & Projects

I’ve been sick with flu like symptoms since Saturday night. Chills/sweats, fever, sore joints, extremely fatigued etc. I think it’s from when I cleaned the chicken run earlier on Saturday. Since it’s rained here every single day for practically 3 weeks now, my run had become extremely soggy from all of the ground water. I went in there into the mucky crappy cesspool and shoveled out what I could, without wearing a respirator. Within hours I started feeling like garbage. So stubborn me (and the only income) has been going to work every day since dragging my butt around and spending each night taking meds to reduce the fever, stop the joint pain and get some sleep. If it continues into tomorrow I’ll need to see a doctor. I’m wondering if the God forsaken rats I’ve been battling for months contaminated the run with some kind of nasty something or other that I inhaled. So a cautionary tale: I’m going to start wearing a respirator whenever I clean up the coop.

BTW I did get fully vaccinated for Covid-19

Something tore through some rotted boards on the coop and killed all my chickens!

 

The neighbor that walks his trails says he has been seeing a fisher cat near our property line. I’d be willing to bet that’s the culprit.

 

We lost the ol patrol hound this past spring. I’m sure if he was still around the chickens would be safe. Still miss that boy.

 

You know, that may be. If I were you I would get another dog. They are very protective and know a heck of a lot more about getting critters than we do.l

I know it may be too late but tractor supply near me had chicks as recently as 2 weeks ago.

 

Thanks folks, it’s one of those things. My buddy across town has an electric fence set up because a bear has been pushing his coop door in so I guess I’m lucky not to have to deal with that. I’ll fix the coop up and get back at it.

 

When I built my chicken coop I put chicken wire over the floor joists before I laid the floor.
I put hardware cloth on the windows. I don't have chickens now but will be ready if I get more.

Sorry to hear this Warner that really stinks!!

We had another bear sighting last week but none since so I am assuming he's moved on. But for a few days there I thought my chickens were an easy meal. The run is exposed but the coop is secure but not bear proof. I've stopped free ranging them unsupervised because I just see and hear way to many hawks. Haven't been out back much because after the mosquitos pick you up and carry you away the humidity and wetness have been sickening. Looking forward to fall!

 

Several years ago, when we had chickens, my neighbor's dog came by and managed to kill 1 hen, he got the taste of it, came back a few days later, dug in to the pen and killed 23 hens and the rooster. Sad to say, chicken was his last meal...
