Over the last Holiday week-end I received my 3rd of 4 delivery's of slab wood from a local Amish mill...Oak, ash, black cheery and some hickory. They all are about 12-18" in length and are about 3-5" thick. Plan on letting it sit for at least 1-2 years before I start using it...This stuff will be perfect for my new stove as well as I think burn real nice...Final load is due on Labor day weekend..
Great! Can be challenging to stack and provide enough air space for good drying. I had a similar situation with some 3x3 oak runners from sheet metal pallets. Every bit of 2+ years before they were ready for the stove. PITA to give them a little breathing room.
Yup, exactly what I found when I bought a load of blocks/cutoffs back in the early days of my wood heat experience...real PITA. Slab wood is often not quite as bad because its either real thin ,or has at least one side that is not flat/will allow for some air flow and moisture migration...
I will be burning some slab wood myself. Cut offs from the mill have to go somewhere. I plan to load them in a wire cage , the move the cage with the loader and I can burn them in the garage furnace. Don’t have about being too particular on stacking them this way.
